Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D Pro Reviews

photozone‘s review Edit

Normal primes have a long standing reputation of high quality for an affordable price and the Nikkor AF-D 50 makes no exception to this rule. The lens is able to deliver very sharp images, at least slightly stopped down. Typical for fast primes there is quite pronounced vignetting wide open as well as bokeh fringing. Distortions are about average for this lens class and usually not an issue for most subjects. CAs are well controlled. Bokeh is a bit on the rough side wide open, but improves by stopping down. Unfortunately the aperture blades are not rounded resulting in non-circular background highlights when stopped down.

Despite the feeling that Nikon's D-series lens has been built to an affordable price and uses previous-generation technology, it performs very well. The fact that it is so compact may also give it additional appeal for some potential buyers.

slrgear‘s review Edit

Despite using a 15-year-old optical formula, the lens still stands up to scrutiny: while it's not tack-sharp when used wide-open, it's still quite good, and stopped down to ƒ/2.8 image quality is excellent. At ƒ/8, it's as sharp as sharp gets.
