MAINGEAR SHIFT Super Stock Pro Reviews

HotHardware‘s review Edit

Few people have the disposable income to afford a $7,500 computer, and even those that do will have a hard time justifying that kind of investment on a PC when you can build a high-end gaming machine for a quarter of that amount, or even less. That's also not the point. You can buy a SHIFT system from Maingear starting at $1,849 for one that's built around AMD's 990FX platform or Intel's Z68 platform, or $2,449 for one that's based on Intel's X79 chipset like the one reviewed here. Those are still relatively expensive when you can pick up a system from Wallyworld or a bulk OEM for less than a grand and be able to play games on it, and there's nothing wrong with that, but the Maingear experience commands a justifiable premium.

Thanks to the help of an expertly overclocked Intel "Sandy Bridge" CPU and a smart choice of components, the Shift Super Stock brings bleeding-edge performance a fair bit closer to affordability.

TechSpot‘s review Edit

Needless to say, this Maingear system isn't for everyone, but going back to our idea of a dream PC build, the Shift comes as close as you can actually get today.

PC World‘s review Edit

Price isn't a factor in our reviews, and it becomes especially superfluous when reviewing built-to-order systems. But the Super Stock Shift still sits in a precarious position. You'll be hard pressed to match the blisteringly fast data transfer rates offered by the solid state drives. And where general performance is concerned, it is the fastest machine we've ever reviewed -- but only a scant 4.6% faster, by our tests. Maingear's signature style shines, and the internal paint job and lighting is sure to appeal to your inner aesthetician. But you'll have to decide if the Super Stock glitz is worth the price.
