The Phenom II X4 840 also has a very good overclocking capability, and will also please the overclockers with a limited budget.

Fudzilla‘s review Edit

The new Phenom II X4 840 is of course not a Phenom. It's just an Athlon II X4 650 but suprisingly it's cheaper than the 100MHz slower clocked X4 645. At just €90,- it's clearly a bargain. Of course we always state an AMD is not as fast as an Intel CPU because nobody cares to optimize the code for AMD besides Microsoft, but for everyday work and gaming it's a great CPU and AMD does support its sockets much longer than Intel, so it's more future proof.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

Like the previous couple of AMD processor updates that we saw last year, there's no new technology at the heart of the new AMD processors out this month. As usual, AMD is attempting to introduce more models to consolidate its market share in the budget and value segment. the Phenom II X4 840 lowers the price barrier for a Phenom II X4 quad-core, no matter that it's an Athlon II X4 core inside. The Phenom II X4 840 surprisingly is better positioned due to its launch price of US$102.

techPowerUp!‘s review Edit

Its price of just $102 is what makes this model such a desirable buy for mainstream and budget computers. If you were running an old Phenom I/Athlon I series and AM2+ motherboard and need a noticeable but cheap CPU upgrade, wouldn't the new Phenom II X4 840 be the only choice that would cross your mind?

benchmarkreviews‘s review Edit

The Phenom-II X4-840 is well-built processor. It's built on the Propus die and should, therefore, be called an Athlon-II, but it maintains the high quality standards of recently released Athlon-II processors. In most of our tests, the Phenom-II X4-840 experienced around 3% better performance than the Athlon-II X4-645. The X4-840 could end up costing about $15 less than this processor, although I am sure the price will drop for all previous AMD processors after the release. Still, the Phenom-II X4-840 is an excellent value at $102.

If you are in the market for a mid-to-low range system and don't need or care about what the fastest and most expensive CPU is on the market, then the AMD Phenom II X4 975 BE and X4 840 CPUs could be of interest even in the wake of Intel's Sandy Bridge.

overclockersclub‘s review Edit

The two new additions to the Phenom II line bring a fresh update to AMD users. the X4 840 gives budget conscious users the ability to build a low cost Phenom II-based system for their general computing needs. The AMD Phenom II X4 840 offers a low budget entry chip that is set to retail for around $100 and offers plenty of performance for workstations and every day computing. Overall, these are two great additions to the Phenom II line and are sure to make any budget happy.

hardwarecanucks‘s review Edit

If you currently have an AM2+/AM3 system with a single or dual-core processor, we have absolutely no qualms recommending the new Phenom II X4 840. It would be a $100 well spent in our opinion and is also forwards compatible with the upcoming AM3+ boards. Having said that, if you are an AMD enthusiast with an eye towards the higher-end Phenom II X4 and X6 models, we would recommend that you wait a bit, since we suspect that AMD is going to do a few price cuts in the not too distant future.

tweaktown‘s review Edit

I have to say that I was a little disappointed with these two new CPUs. I guess I was hoping for a little more than was presented. In that respect, the 975 BE and the 840 do a pretty good job. In the end, we can say that both of these CPUs perform well for the money, but with new things on the horizon we are not sure if we can recommend them just yet.
