Sony SAL-70200G Pro Reviews

slrgear‘s review Edit

There can be no argument that in the Sony alpha lens lineup, the 70-200mm is a lens of the highest quality, offering superb results. However, the sub-par performance of the lens at ƒ/2.8, at 70mm and 200mm specifically, is certainly noteworthy. Is it fair to criticize the overall performance of the lens with these two specific aperture and focal length combinations? Given that a large percentage of shots taken with this lens will likely be at 200mm and ƒ/2.8, I would think its performance at that particular setting would be a chief component to a prospective purchaser. This is definitely a case of try before you buy, and know what you're getting into. This one criticism aside, it doesn't get much better than this, especially if you stop down to even ƒ/4.

The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 SSM G can give you very good results on a full format DSLR but it is not a lens without issues. It is certainly sharp - the center image portion has an extremely high quality at all mainstream settings and the borders are generally very good. The corners are a little soft at 135mm+ at max. aperture but they recover towards medium aperture settings as well. The amount of vignetting is about typical for a lens in this class - you will be able to see some light falloff at f/2.8 in critical scenes but the issue is mostly resolved at f/4. Image distortions are moderate at the extreme ends of the zoom range but not overly significant in the medium range,
