Tessellation performance demonstrates the improved throughput of the Cayman architecture over the Bart GPU quite nicely when benchmarked with Unigine's Heaven benchmark. With a resolution of 1,920x1,200 resolution, 4xFSAA and 4xAF filtering at the normal tessellation setting, we achieved an average frame rates for the HD6970 and HD6870 of 43.8fps and 29.6fps, respectively.

In many respects, the Sapphire HD 6970 should be considered a competitor to the GTX 570 and it does a good job of doing that as performance is just a little ahead of that card in most respects. It is released at 880MHz for the core and 5.5GHz for the memory, or the reference default clocks. Sapphire includes the game Battlefield Bad Company 2 Vietnam, which will be released in the next week or two, making it a great add on to this product.

The HD 6970 performs well, it offers good value and Sapphire has put a great bundle together. Ignoring the bundle, though, and just looking at the HD 6970 for what it is and at the suggested selling price, the answer to the question rises. Do you buy the GTX 570 or the HD 6970? It can't really be answered and I think that's a bigger issue for AMD than it is for NVIDIA. We could end up in an aggressive price war with the consumer in the middle; and you know what, it wouldn't be a bad thing. Don't let it stop you from buying a card now, though.
