From what I saw, the Cayman Pro-equipped ASUS HD6950 performed more or less as it was meant to. Like the reference design, it was able to usually outperform, or perform as well as, the GTX 480. Once overclocked, the card, every once in a while, came close to the GTX 580, which was nice to see. The card's overclocking ability was good, with a nice 20% bonus in clock speed over the factory-delivered speeds. 965MHz on the core and 1505MHz on the GDDR5 memory is really nothing to turn your nose up at, since it equates to free performance — Albeit with a little work on your own to get there. ASUS's Smart Doctor utility is flexible enough to allow the clock speeds and voltages to be enhanced with an easy to use GUI.

Radeon HD 6950 is significantly different to HD 6850, despite the similar name - but as things stand, the performance of this new chip isn't compelling. The contribution made by Asus to this particular package is negligible, as this is very much a reference card in a pretty box. It's perfectly possible that in time there will be future driver updates that help HD 6950, but right now we are just not won over and would stick with the cheaper HD 5850.

A tandem of two Radeon HD 6950 cards in CrossFire can achieve excellent performance levels that easily surpass AMD's aging HD 5970 dual card and also beat NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580 by over 25%. Especially in higher resolutions like 2560x1600 we see the gap widen. 2560x1600 should be considering the entry level resolution for a setup like this, ranging well into the higher EyeFinity resolutions. With a total price of about $600 for both cards, the price tag is certainly something to think twice about before making a quick buying decision.
