Scientists of the headphone scene, the Sennheiser HD 800 are startlingly accurate and insightful. With a gigantic sound stage, they can make music sound as if it is coming out of speakers nearby more than almost any other set we’ve heard. They’re immensely comfortable too, and unless you take against their “futuristic” silvery look entirely, that they’re giant and eye-catching needn’t be a downer as they should only be used indoors anyway. Better get saving, eh?

The only thing that counts against the HD800s is that for all their precise clarity, they don’t muster the astonishing levels of instrumental realism that rivals such as the Grado GS1000i manage. As great as these Sennheisers are, the Grados have an authenticity and openness that makes the HD800s sound, comparatively, slightly sterile. Make no mistake, though – these are terrific headphones. And are definitely worth a listen.

Even at the absurd pricepoint of $1400 these headphones manage to be worth it to people who want the very best sounding headphone setup. Besides that the headphones are the best sounding set of headphones I have heard to date, by far. Everything else pales in comparison and even though the finish is a bit iffy, I would love to keep these around the den, much to my other headphones' disappointment since no one in their right mind would ever want to take these things off.

If the recordings you listen to are below par you'll get the proverbial warts and all, but even that's not so bad: the HD800 is ruthlessly revealing, but somehow still seems to make the best of whatever redeeming features a recording possesses.
