Overall, the board is rock stable at our overclock settings. If we had the choice between the Extreme3 and the EX58-UD3R, We'd be happy to part with an extra dollar for SATA 6Gb/s and USB3 support, even if it means having slightly worse 3D performance, and a BIOS which can be frustrating to use at times. We feel ASRock would be wise to spend some time refining their BIOS up to the standard of what we find on similarly priced ASUS and Gigabyte boards.

ASRock is not known as an enthusiast’s dream come true with the motherboards. With the X58 Extreme3 motherboard, they have proved that appearances can be deceiving. With a host of great features that any X58 board would be proud of, including external SATA 6 Gb/second ports, the X58 Extreme offers good performance and a solid bundle. If you are looking for an X58 board for that new Gulftown 980X CPU and want the latest technology, the ASRock Extreme3 motherboard is a great fit. External SATA has hit the mainstream on motherboards and this board has the newest iteration on an external SATA 6GB/second USB Combo port.

We were impressed by the way that the ASRock OC Tuner section of the BIOS delivered top performance with the minimum of work. The result is a motherboard that is fairly packed with features including USB 3.0, although the price is rather steep. Despite that we found plenty to admire in the ASRock X58 Extreme3.
