So the 21:9 Cinema screen is only good for Blu-ray movies: while it includes a Freeview tuner it's not ideal for watching television or playing games. The £4,000 price tag backs up the idea that this is really a TV for the high end – for people who can afford a TV that's only for watching films.

My, but this TV isn’t cheap. Except, when you factor in all the features, the remarkable aspect ratio and the stand-out picture quality, it sort of is. The picture works well whatever you throw at it but the LED dimming makes widescreen content look really exceptional, aided by the trusty Philips Ambilight effect. The 3D image quality is also stand-out and makes for a highly enjoyable cinema-in-the-living-room experience.

Almost four grand gets almost the finished article, but this unique 21:9-shaped LED-studded screen is a specialist screen. With wow factor in spades, this 58-incher lacks a Freeview HD tuner or convincing 3D pictures, yet its jaw-dropping contrast and high-def detail from immaculate 2.35:1 Blu-ray presentations should make it irresistible to movie buffs.

It was always going to be a tricky task to reach perfection on its second attempt. This new 21:9 set is cheaper and very much improved in some areas, but Philips needs to iron out a few more flaws before it can be considered a true flatscreen siren.

Sure, the 58PFL9955H’s lack of a Freeview HD tuner is irritating, the work needed to get the best from it might seem intimidating, and the crosstalk with 3D (however minimal versus rival LCD sets) is definitely an area for Philips to work on for next time. But ultimately during our time with the 58PFL9955H there were moments - many moments, actually - where it genuinely feels like the best TV we’ve ever reviewed. And it’s this feeling that’s stayed with us far, far more since we reluctantly had to give the TV back than any of the negative stuff.
