LG Optimus 2X Pro Reviews

GSMArena‘s review Edit

The LG Optimus 2X was a flagship in its heyday while the Samsung I9103 Galaxy R was simply meant as a more affordable version of the Galaxy S II. Nearly half a year sets the two apart, but they demonstrated very similar performance in our quick shootout. The biggest differentiating factor between the two seems to be TV-Out - if you want to pair your phone with the TV, the LG Optimus 2X offers FullHD playback over HDMI with mirroring, whereas the Galaxy R has only the wireless DLNA option (also available on the 2X). Other than that, the Optimus 2X has the better camera, but not by as much as the numbers suggest (8MP vs. 5MP, 1080p vs. 720p). The 10% bigger screen of the Galaxy R is much brighter than the 2X's display, but you'll have to settle for poorer black levels. The tradeoffs go on - if you want to watch videos on the go, the Samsung phone offers a full hour more of battery life, but if you browse more than you watch video, then the LG will probably offer a smoother experience due to its better performance. Then there are the subjective differences like styling, custom Android UIs and so on. These are matters of personal taste and we shouldn't be telling you which one is better. It all boils down to what you use your mobile phone for. Any of the phones in this comparison would be more than happy to serve. And although the LG Optimus 2X clearly has the upper hand in imaging and connectivity, the bottom line is that both phones are hard to beat for their performance to price.

pocketnow‘s review Edit

I was expecting the LG Optimus 2X to be blazingly fast in all respects. I thought it was going to be a challenge to get it to show any signs of lag. I was actually looking forward to seeing how many things I could do at the same time on an Android phone with such a high-end processor like the Tegra 2. Unfortunately the actual experience was not so great. Slowness showed up even before I was able to install any other programs or load it up with music and videos. There are reports that loading Launcher Pro on the device will improve the speediness, but as a consumer device, you shouldn't have to do that. I guess it goes to show you that just because you've got the latest and greatest processor, it doesn't necessarily mean the device will actually be super fast. On the other hand, the apps in the Nvidia Tegra Zone catalog app, which are designed to take advantage of the Tegra 2 processor, run quite nicely and offer some impressive graphics. The video playback quality is also fantastic, and I'm sure the dual cores are put to great use if you often plug your phone into a big screen TV using HDMI. If you're the type that's going to buy a phone just to put a custom ROM on it, then the LG Optimus 2X has got some great high-end hardware for you to play with. If you're a consumer who uses a phone with whatever it comes with for software, I'd recommend looking for something a bit more reliable and easy to use.

Its look is not particularly modern, but it feels great when held in hand. This LG model offers an exceptional screen and a pleasant on-screen keyboard. With its performances and multimedia options, Optimus 2X offers a lot more than the average. It is one of the most interesting models for consumers who want to save some money by not purchasing a top smartphone model, but a mid-range device which actually offers more.

PC Pro‘s review Edit

It’s very good without being the best at anything it does. It’s a perfectly likeable Android handset with strong, but not table-topping, performance and a screen that’s better than most. But when you can get the superior Samsung Galaxy S II for only an extra £5 per month, we don’t think many would choose the LG.

Fast gaming performance and some interesting features can't save LG's Optimus 2X from feeling like a rush job.

The LG Optimus 2X is an excellent phone. Its styling is lovely, it packs in oodles of high-end hardware and thanks to its Android OS, it's hugely versatile. However, LG has made a few too many slip ups for it to really hit the top spot. Nontheless, particularly thanks to it being a bit cheaper than the competition, if you're looking for a true smartphone powerhouse, it's well worth considering.

Software niggles aside, the LG Optimus 2X is a super handset. Very speedy in response to the finger, offering a large screen and good skin, it's a leading light and makes us look forward with some excitment to the other dual-core Android smartphones that will be along in short order.

GSMArena‘s review Edit

The Galaxy S II had more time to prepare for this fight than the Optimus 2X – that’s the price of being the first dual-core smartphone out there. Rushing to be first in the world, the Optimus came out without the latest Android build and without competition, while the Galaxy S II had time to check out its opponents and give its best. A little like cheating, we have to say. But the end result is what counts above everything else. But don’t take this as a total defeat for the Optimus 2X. It’s still a nice and powerful device. And it stood its ground with pride. It has a relatively good display and camera plus a great processor that’s still almost unmatched in smartphone terms. It’s a great smartphone, it's just not the best – that would have to be the Galaxy S II's title.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

Is a dual-core smartphone really that necessary? We might have appreciated it more if the phone lasted longer. But for what it's worth, the LG Optimus 2X will attract gamers who are interested in a capable device that can handle intensive graphical rendering without losing frame rates. Given that Sony is looking to bring Playstation Suite to Tegra 2 phones and smartphones (which inadvertently means that users can relive PS1 originals) on Android 2.3 and newer devices, the Optimus 2X is a timely release (the phone itself comes with the Android 2.2 OS, but a 2.3 update is well on its way). For the rest of us who don't require that extra processing power and would rather have our phones last longer, there are plenty of other options to choose from - for now.

With the introduction of the LG Optimus LG seems to be back on track claiming precious market share. The LG Optimus 2Xx Android smartphone received a warm welcome after it was presented in the beginning of this year. LG was the first to introduce the world’s first smartphone with a Dual Core processor.

AnandTech‘s review Edit

The 2X is somewhat of a dichotomy. On one side, you've got moderately aesthetically pleasing hardware, class-leading performance from Tegra 2 that doesn't sacrifice battery life at the stake, and a bunch of notable and useful extras like HDMI mirroring. On the other, you've got some serious experience-killing instability issues (which need to be fixed by launch), a relatively mundane baseband launching at a time when we're on the cusp of 4G, and perhaps most notably a host of even better-specced Tegra 2 based smartphones with more RAM, better screens, and 4G slated to arrive very soon. Between the performance we’re seeing and the design wins (both announced and rumored) NVIDIA is off to a great start. I will say that I’m pleasantly surprised.

GSMArena‘s review Edit

The most powerful hardware we have seen, combined with a decent display and a nicely customized interface. Okay the camera could use a little tweaking, but its still one of the good snappers in the Android world. The device is definitely the smartphone to get right now and will most certainly remain so for at least another month or two. Especially given the fact that Android 2.2 Froyo is hardly the best polished operating system as far as dual-core CPU management is concerned.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

However, it's crucial to remember this is not final release software, and would be harsh to judge the phone properly before we get our hands on that. It's highly feasible most, if not all, of the issues raised here will be fixed in a few new software builds, so keep checking back for our straightforward and definitive LG Optimus 2X review.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

There is no doubt that the LG Optimus 2X is a hugely powerful device. It just keeps rolling on no matter what you throw at it. We were blown away with the Full HD performance streaming through the HDMI into a TV – at this point in time it’s the best performance in this role we’ve seen. The screen is excellent and the build quality is ok, even if the design and materials aren’t quite as premium as we suspect others will try and offer. The response is fantastic and although LG has tinkered here and there, some of their changes we quite like. Others, like the keyboard is easily rectified. But that’s always the story with Android: very often, if you don’t like it, you can do something about it.

MobileBurn‘s review Edit

As the first dual-core smartphone on the market from a major manufacturer, it is no surprise that the LG Optimus 2X can dance circles around other devices when it comes to benchmarks. And while I have to admit that the gaming experience on the device is fantastic, thanks partly to the gyroscopic sensor, I just didn't feel that that extra processor core was doing anything useful for me 99% of the time. As it stands, though, the phone is solid and sure to attract lustful drooling from geeks everywhere, but it just didn't suit me as well as some other Android phones on the market. It would, though, still be very easy to live with on a day to day basis.

The LG Optimus 2X is a great phone and it is noticeably faster: whether it is at web browsing, video encoding/decoding, Flash or video games – the important thing is that the extra horsepower can actually be felt by the end user during ordinary usage.

Phone Arena‘s review Edit

To top it off, the phone offers a fully-featured HDMI port for watching 1080p videos or play games on your TV, as well as a helpful selection of preinstalled apps, like a year's worth of Mobile Security subscription. And so it goes - this Android powerhouse is a no-brainer if the price is right, be it for the simple fact that you will be future-proof when developers start dishing out apps which take advantage of two cores.
