Although it doesn't have fantastic performance, the beautiful design and excellent battery life elevate it above other ultra-portables. If it weren't for the high price, it would be a great alternative to a netbook for those wanting a bigger screen and more power.

The Samsung X420 is a great machine. It is a real pity the typing action isn't firmer, but ultimately this doesn't detract from what is a very rounded mobile computing solution. Excellent portability and decent performance make this a great choice for the regular traveller on a budget.

There's little to fault the X420 in terms of build quality and hardware. It's light, sexy and quite a performer. In retrospect, its glossy lid might be a haven for fingerprints, though it does lend a touch of class to its overall aesthetics compared to the prototype's matte cover. Also, the 16:9 screen is satisfactorily bright and sharp to suit your needs, whether it's for office applications or movie playback. Not to mention the notebook also comes with a HDMI port should you prefer to blow up your HD clips onto a larger screen or TV.

When you hold the Samsung X420 up to the light, you can see the glitter of metallic particles embedded in the casing. It also promises good performance and portability with its dual-core processor and large battery. Will the subnotebook turn out to be an ultra-mobile glamour queen or something more down-to-earth?
