However, that said, we like having a separate dedicated device and we still think that TomTom’s navigation solution is amongst the best, certainly better than free smartphone offerings. One of the key things you are getting here is HD Traffic, which is a service that we’ve found ourselves using on every journey over the past month. As such, TomTom’s Via Live 120 comes recommended.

It's easy to be impressed by the TomTom Via LIVE 120 and you can buy it for less than its £200 RRP. Apart from a few nav-niggles, the LIVE Services are a serious advantage for regular drivers. However, it's worth keeping in mind that you'll be paying extra for the privilege. Without HD Traffic, Google Local Search and mobile speed camera locations, this device becomes much more ordinary.

Despite a couple of minor flaws, the Via Live 120 is a great satnav. We just hope MyTomTom is fully working soon.

The TomTom Via LIVE 120 brings some excellent navigation technology to an even more affordable level. Against the alternatives from other manufacturers, it makes a strong case, particularly if you're a regular rush-hour commuter. However, at its current price it sits uncomfortably between the XL LIVE and GO LIVE 1000. The former is £20 cheaper, but we'd argue that the improved interface and faster routing of the Via LIVE 120 are worth the extra. In contrast, you can now buy the Regional edition of the GO LIVE 1000 for under £200. So until the Via LIVE 120 drops in price a bit more and replaces the XL LIVE, you might as well forego a round of drinks and get the GO LIVE 1000 instead.
