MSI N580GTX-M2D15D5 Pro Reviews

HotHardware‘s review Edit

The MSI N580GTX M2D15D5/OC had the most aggressive GPU and memory settings out of the box and proceeded to rip every benchmark we threw at it with a vengeance. It consistently turned in the highest frame rate in the majority of the tests conducted. Only in a few tests could the dual GPU HD 5970 top its performance. But clearly, the MSI N580GTX was the strongest card in this round up.

If you've got the money and you demand nothing but power then this is the kind of setup you should be looking at. If you wanted to go SLI GTX 480 but got scared off by the heat and power draw, this is the kind of setup you should be looking at. When you combine the fastest single GPU video card on the market with a second one, you blow out the bank account and blow out the FPS. I can understand why people think that it's crazy to spend so much on a VGA setup like the one we're looking at today, but this kind of setup is just all about performance and making sure your games can look as good as they can and run as smooth as they can.

The GTX 580 is just a beast of a card when it comes to overall performance. I’m not too sure why NVIDIA didn’t want to send us one. By not sending us one at launch the score of the overall card just dropped because we would’ve had N/A for Availability. Instead, because it took us a few weeks to get one and stock seems to be quite bad, we had to drop the Availability score a fair bit. Single monitor, massive resolution and high detail levels are where this card is aimed at and it covers those areas extremely well. If you have the need, the need for speed and you have no interest in multi GPU setups, as of this moment this is the card to own!

Talk about a mixed bag for me. I find myself really struggling with the GTX 580. The first thing that has to be said is that this card doesn’t deserve to be part of a new series. It’s essentially a GTX 480 on steroids. The performance boost is indeed very nice, but it doesn’t really bring anything new to the table. It’s fast, it’s overpriced, it’s hardly available and it’s a card a lot of people are still going to want, because it does one thing very well - Run games well!
