GIGABYTE GV-N480SO-15I Pro Reviews

HotHardware‘s review Edit

The MSI N480GTX Lightning and Gigabyte GeForce GTX 480 SOC both performed very well throughout testing. Both of the cards were measurably faster than a reference GeForce GTX 480, as expected. Overall, the Gigabyte card proved to be faster than MSI’s offering due to the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 480 SOC’s higher GPU core and shader clocks, but the MSI card’s faster memory gave it an edge in AvP. In light of NVIDIA’s recent GPU releases, both of these cards slightly trail the GTX 580, but typically run on par with or slightly better than a GTX 570.

The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 480 Superclock is a great video card. It is the highest clocked GeForce GTX 480 we can find, and it isn’t the most expensive. In terms of pricing, it sits right in the middle of the GTX 480 pack at $469 MSRP. It’s quiet, it’s fast, and keeps itself cool. It’s cooling device very effectively removes heat from the video card itself, but then it dumps it all right into your case, so if you are thinking about picking one of these up, make sure your case has adequate ventilation to accommodate the large amount of heat that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 GPU can generate.

For the extreme overclocker, and even the folks who want to run water cooling, the power supply and BIOS features make this a standout video card for bagging the top clocks anywhere you go. For the person who's never going to take the factory cooler off, there are some cheaper alternatives out there today. The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 480 Super Overclock card is a viable choice, but only if the special features are needed to meet your special needs. It can't compete directly with the latest GPUs from NVIDIA, and it never will at its current price. I'm actually hoping the prices will bottom out in a month or so and I can pick up a second one for SLI. I told you I liked it, I just don't like the current pricing.

Gigabyte's timing with their GeForce GTX 480 Super Overclock couldn't be worse. With the first stores getting stock only weeks after NVIDIA released their new GeForce GTX 580, a lot of potential customers will be considering the GTX 480 "old stuff". But this is not entirely true. Gigabyte has done a great job tweaking the GTX 480 design for overclockers. Several features have been added, like the dual BIOS that helps extreme overclockers with liquid nitrogen. Less extreme users will certainly like the voltage measurement points (even if they are incredibly hard to reach) and the software voltage control for GPU, memory and PCI-E voltage. Other improvements are more powerful voltage regulation circuitry and a triple fan cooling solution.

It comes as no surprise that the card carries with it a higher price tag than the standard GTX 480, but it seems clear at $469 the card isn’t too bad a buy if you’re happy to take it over the more expensive GTX 580 which is at least $100 more expensive. Considering performance is said to be about 15% better when compared to a stock model and the price is more than 20% higher than this overclocked GIGABYTE offering, you can imagine that the card won’t have any serious issue selling.

Which overclocks more though? We've already seen MSI's N480GTX Lightning reach a GPU core frequency of over 1,400MHz (with stream processors running in excess of 2,800MHz) in one instance, but ultimately it'll likely end up being down to the luck of picking a quality Nvidia GF100 die that goes onto each board. Keep your eyes on the overclocking leader boards to see who'll win out!
