Dell XPS 15 Pro Reviews

expertreviews‘s review Edit

A powerful laptop, but an unresponsive touchpad and disappointing ultra-high resolution screen let it down

We awarded the Dell XPS 15 L501x our Gold Editors' Choice award last year, so normally I'd just say the L502x update maintains that standing. From the performance side, it's certainly a worthwhile update. The problem is the keyboard and plastic palm rest. I personally prefer the old version, but some will probably like the new chiclet style more. I'm not going to actually give an official award here, letting the Gold sort of carry over, but with all the good there's still room to make the XPS line better.

The highly configurable XPS 15 is a speedy performer, and the touch screen in our test unit was both convenient and fun. It's a winning touch laptop.

After finishing all tests, we can pat Dell on the shoulder without hesitation. The manufacturer has maintained the XPS 15's numerous strengths and taken care of old weaknesses at the same time. The temperature and noise development isn't yet perfect, but they are no longer a hindrance for purchasing, in our opinion. There aren't any other critique points except for the fairly spongy and unclear (illuminated) keyboard. The XPS 15 does an impressively good job in practically all other issues.

By adding Sandy Bridge to an already fine laptop, Dell has created an entertainment tour-de-force

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

The Dell XPS 15 (Sandy Bridge) is arguably the most complete desktop replacement laptop, even if it isn't the fastest or the prettiest.

Equipped with second-gen Intel Core i-series CPUs and improved Nvidia graphics, the new Dell XPS 15 performs even better than its predecessor, although it's still just as bulky. Also, keep in mind that the XPS 15 ranges greatly in price, from $799 up to $1,500.

Sets a new standard for quality on almost every front: its design, screen, speakers, performance and connectivity are the best you can get for the price.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

Although you can get an XPS 15 for as little as £529, with Core i5, Bluetooth 3, the combo Blu-ray/DVD burner and the superb 1080p screen the model we looked at is nearly twice the price at £939. You can reduce that by leaving out a few of the options, but it's the combination of the screen, the sound system and the performance that makes the XPS 15 a winner. The word we keep wanting to use is solid - but in a good way.

Overall, Dell's XPS 15 is an impressive machine, offering good build quality, class-leading connectivity, decent video and audio, and plenty of power for the average user. It's fully upgradeable too, including such luxuries as a digital TV tuner and the unique (for a consumer laptop at this price point) option of a Full HD, RGB-LED backlit screen, which makes this an intriguing choice for colour-critical work.

The Dell XPS 15 offers high-end audio, fast performance, and good battery life, but falls behind in other models when it comes to its lackluster design.

AnandTech‘s review Edit

Honestly, even without the LCD the XPS L501x impresses, as it has bar none the best laptop speakers we've encountered, with a great build quality and aesthetic to match. It's not as thin and light as other notebooks, but it still looks good and there's a wonderful lack of glossy surfaces (other than the LCD). Such extras do matter, and what's more you can get all of this for essentially the same price as the N82Jv. Graphics performance is slightly slower, and the chassis is larger, but this is easily the best 15-16" notebook I've laid hands on during my time with AnandTech (now at six years and counting).

PC Pro‘s review Edit

Dell's XPS 15 offers a finely judged balance of performance and features at a very reasonable price. In fact, there's only one major stumbling block: that oh-so-alluring price is one of Dell's time-limited offers. When it goes back to the original £680 ticket, it won't be quite such an amazing deal, but it will still be a good desktop replacement for sensible money, and that makes it one worth recommending.

Finally, the XPS 15 has gotten a chance to go through our obstacle course. This configuration of a powerful quad-core CPU and Nvidia GeForce GT 435M GPU on an optimized full HD RGB LED screen shows promise not only in terms of application and graphics performance but also as a multimedia device.

Anyone looking for a high-powered entertainment laptop but restrained by their budget will find the Dell XPS 15 a perfect companion. With excellent performance, strong build quality, a colourful display and surprisingly powerful audio, this mini machine can effortlessly keep the whole family amused.

Dell's new line of XPS laptops, including the XPS 15, offers more bang for the buck than most, combining great audio and rock-solid features for less than $1,000.

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

Calling the Dell XPS 15 the pre-eminent desktop replacement laptop is a no-brainer, since there's nothing else like it right now. It has a long list of features that you can't get with any other laptop—at least not all of them at the same time. The 1080p resolution, HD webcam, studio-quality sound, and the Nvidia GeForce GT 400M series graphics card are among the list of must-haves. And more importantly, you're not paying a ridiculous amount for them. The only upgrade I would adamantly recommend is spending the extra $40 on the 9-cell battery. Otherwise, this is as impressive as desktop replacements laptop gets.

LAPTOP Magazine‘s review Edit

If you're looking for a reasonably priced all-purpose notebook that's great for multimedia and good enough for real gaming, the Dell XPS 15 is one of your best options. The sound quality alone really sets this laptop apart, as does the HD webcam (though we wish it performed better in low light). If you're looking for something more portable and stylish, you might want to consider a 14-inch system like the HP Envy 14. However, if you want an entertainment PC for use around the house, the XPS 15 should be near or at the top of your list.
