ECS A785GM-M is a fully-loaded micro ATX motherboard targeted to users that don’t want a bigger ATX motherboard and/or probably won’t be running games all the time – don’t even try to run newer games because the on-board video from AMD 785G isn’t powerful enough for that. With the presence of an HDMI output, an optical SPDIF output and eSATA ports, this board is an option for users building a home theater PC. Audio specs are not that bad but they are not professional-grade. If you have this kind of money to spend on a motherboard you may consider paying USD 10 more and getting A790GXM-AD3 also from ECS.

We have to admit the performance is better than we expected, and despite the odd test flop, it's generally very good. However, we're still aware most other companies continually push forward, we still find ECS lagging behind in certain key areas. The A785GM-M is a good product that should certainly suffice for a basic PC build, but it doesn't really do enough to inspire us to recommend it as a must buy.

If you are wanting a solid board with a numerous amount of features to run at stock settings, this is one heck of a board especially if you are building an HPTC where you want cool temperatures at low voltages. If overclocking is your piece of pie, then you would want to look at a higher end board.

ECS's board is a great fit for the Home Theater PC user that wants a quiet system with no fans besides the CPU cooler. The board has all of the features that you would want from a HTPC motherboard including HDMI, DVI-D and VGA ports on the back panel. The inclusion of the ALC888S audio CODEC and integrated HD 4200 graphics means that lossless Blu-Ray playback is possible with this motherboard without an additional graphics card. Performance is on par with the other 785G motherboards on the market, and the board is available online for under $100 making it a good choice for those wanting an inexpensive single video card system.

Next up, the ECS A785GM-M had some very nice touches that while not exactly innovative, showed that the company was competitive in terms of features. We also liked its layout the best of all. What held it back was simply the choice by ECS of not equipping it with the SidePort memory found on the others. This hindered its performance and its BIOS settings was the weakest of the three as it missed some crucial settings.

The ECS A785GM-M motherboard is priced at about $90 USD, which is fair compared to other AMD 785G motherboards. What we like about this motherboard are the VGA/DVI/HDMI connections, eSATA, Firewire, an easy overclocking process, and just the overall package. When using Ubuntu 9.10, the only real issue we have been challenged by during our tenure with this motherboard has been the Radeon HD 4200 graphics is actually lower performance compared to the Radeon HD 3200, but again, we are continuing this investigation.

In conclusion, the A785GM-M is truly a great budget overclocker and provided enough power stability to handle even the most power-hungry AM3 processors. While the integrated graphics didn't impress me, the overall board's features and price point should entice many consumers to give ECS's A785GM-M a double-take, especially when they consider other boards with these feature sets on the market today.
