HTC EVO Shift 4G Pro Reviews

pocketnow‘s review Edit

Although the EVO Shift may not be making leaps and bounds over other Android phones out there it is still able to stand on its own. As the third 4G phone to be released by Sprint, one would wonder why not continue the trend they had set forth with the high-end EVO 4G and Epic. For those that want a reasonably priced less-intimidating 4G phone the EVO Shift is nearly perfect. The EVO Shift has snappy hardware, an excellent build of Android, and the HTC Sense UI, this makes for an easy to use smartphone that is consumer friendly to the novice and avid smartphone aficionado.

The HTC EVO Shift 4G is a smartphone for people who want to do a lot of email and texting with their smartphone, as it's relatively large keyboard is ideal for these purposes. Combine that with an average-sized display and you have a device more focused on getting things done than having fun. There's nothing wrong with that -- not at all, but it's something that those who are buying it should be aware of. It has a mid-range price and a mid-range feature set, so it's undoubtedly a decent value. Add in the fact that it's just been updated with the latest version of Google's operating system for smartphones and it's something many Sprint customers should consider.

The EVO Shift 4G is a great addition to the EVO lineup of devices, and appeals to a demographic that was left out by the original device. That said, Sprint's 4G speeds are very erratic, and the display may be too small for some users.

Phone Scoop‘s review Edit

If you're in the market for an Android phone that has WiMax and a keyboard, the EVO Shift 4G is one of the only options out there. Sure, it doesn't have quite the same sex appeal as the current crop of flagship Android devices, but not every smartphone can be a Ferrari. Some have to be Fords.

PC World‘s review Edit

If you find the size and price of the $200 HTC EVO 4G and the $230 Samsung Epic 4G intimidating, you may be a good candidate for the HTC EVO Shift 4G--especially if you don't need an extra-large display or a front-facing camera. It's too bad that the main camera got a downgrade as well, but that isn't a dealbreaker. Sprint promised us a heap of 4G phones this year so if the Shift doesn't suit you, you'll surely find something later this year.

The EVO Shift 4G is a good phone, but not the sexiest around but it is fast and it provides a very good Android (2.2) experience. It has one of the better *horizontal* sliding keyboards that I have played with, and I would say that this is very important if the keyboard is the reason why you are getting it to start with. The keys “click” nicely and their backlighting looks really good. If you are lucky enough to be in a place covered by Sprint’s 4G network, you will be able to enjoy “beyond-3G” speeds, and if you’re not using 4G, you can always disable it to save power. Finally, I love the “hotspot” feature that has become so practical at times (for an additional fee).

HotHardware‘s review Edit

While the HTC EVO Shift 4G doesn't have all the features of the highest end smartphones, what it does, it does well. And we found its compromises to be a fair trade. Instead of a front-facing camera, it offers a slimmer form more comfortable when using it as a phone. Instead of a higher-end camera and HDMI slot, it offers a slide-out keyboard, which provides more viewable area onscreen in many situations and choices of how to input text. Instead of an included 8GB microSD, it offers a lower price and a bit more ROM storage. We found the phone so responsive and easy to use however, be it surfing, texting, playing games or talking, that the Evo Shift's compromises felt less significant.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

For those who crave a physical keyboard, the HTC Evo Shift 4G is a solid choice with a more wallet-friendly price than its 4G competitors, and it doesn't sacrifice too many features.

MobileBurn‘s review Edit

In the end, I think the EVO Shift 4G is my favorite smartphone on Sprint. It is a great utility device, thanks to its keyboard, and HTC's Sense user interface is very highly polished and relatively easy to use. And if you happen to have good 4G coverage in your area, you will be amazed at the data speeds the phone can offer.

LAPTOP Magazine‘s review Edit

For $149, the Shift 4G is a reasonably priced 4G smart phone that gives Sprint customers a physical keyboard option. Plus, it's more affordable than the Samsung Epic 4G and Evo 4G, both of which are $199. We prefer the keyboard and the brighter and bigger Super AMOLED display on the Epic 4G, but the Shift 4G lasts more than an hour longer on a charge. Overall, the Shift 4G is a solid pick for what you're paying. It offers faster web speeds than the T-Mobile G2 and Motorola Droid 2 and a good typing experience.

Phone Arena‘s review Edit

Looking at its $149.99 on-contract price, there is no arguing that the HTC EVO Shift 4G is a respectable Android smartphone based on its overall performance, but there is this nagging feeling pulsating in the back of our minds about it. Specifically, it plays in direct contention with the HTC EVO 4G and Samsung Epic 4G (both priced at $199.99 now) – which is primarily due to its 4G WiMAX connectivity. In the end, the HTC EVO Shift 4G is a good handset, but if it were priced more competitively, it could potentially garner some additional attention.

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

The HTC EVO Shift 4G is a powerful, less costly alternative to the EVO 4G on Sprint, and gives hardware keyboard fans another choice besides the Samsung Epic 4G.
