We’ll start with 6850 overclocking in general. While we only use a subset of our most performance-hungry games in overclocking testing, it’s clear that 6850 overclocking isn’t going to be a simple case of overclocking the core first, and getting what you can out of the memory second. While the XFX Radeon HD 6850 has excellent cooling, it’s much too aggressive in our tests; lower temperatures don’t do anything on their own, we’re only concerned about them to the point that they’re low enough that we need not be concerned with the lifespan of a card.

Overall, the performance of the cards were pretty much in line with our expectations. The XFX Radeon HD 6850 Black Edition is one of the better cards in this roundup, offering slightly improved performance over a reference card and a pretty effective cooler. And overall, it is a close match for the Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 Toxic Edition, losing out only when it came to overclocking performance and its higher asking price.

XFX has a winner on their hands with the new 6850, its priced right, plays all the latest DX11 games and can compete with any mid level card on the market today, thumbs up for the HD RADEON 6850.

While the lower temperature of the XFX’s GPU and the £150 price (despite using a custom cooler) are good to see, the loud fan didn’t win much praise. As a stock-speed HD 6850 1GB, the performance of the XFX was on a par with that of a GTX 460 1GB, but the reference cooler of the GeForce card is much quieter. We’ll have another HD 6850 1GB partner online soon, but we’d rather have a standard GTX 460 1GB than this noisy XFX card.
