MSI 790GX-G65 Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

As for the motherboard it is the bomb-digity for it's price. High overclocking abilities, excelent slot positioning, excelent features positioning like SATA and front headers, dosen't look like a Carebear, and the IGP isn't to bad either. You can't really ask for more since the MSI 790GX-G65 only goes for $129.99 on Newegg.com. Considering it's bigger brother is $50 more and only has a few more extra enthusiast features it puts this board in the right place for mainstream users and the budget gamer who wants high performance. I really only have one thing to complain about; the RAM slots are way to close to the CPU. Other than that this board is great for its price.

When it comes to overall feeling of the MSI 790GX-G65, I am finally glad to see AMD based systems moving to the faster DDR3 specifications. When running only two sticks of memory, the manual says they have to be placed in the first channel closest to the CPU to boot which makes having wide large CPU heatsinks hard to install if at all. Even with a stock AMD heatsink I managed to scratch my RAM heatsinks when installing them, because they are right up against the CPU heatsink with no room to breathe. MSI has put together a board that performs well for a reasonable price. What more do you need?

MSI balances performance and price perfectly with this entry-level AM3 motherboard that won't break the bank.

A decent board, but the AM3 platform as a whole isn't yet a persuasive value proposition.

A reasonably priced AMD motherboard with built-in graphics, but it does cost more than equivalent AM2+ boards.

MSI has given its motherboards a makeover and the 790GX-G65 shows this new direction has great promise. It's a neat 790GX motherboard and the BIOS has been developed in an intelligent manner that adds some useful features.

motherboards‘s review Edit

AMD's launch of the AM3 platform is an interesting one from many angles. For the new computer owner the move to DDR3 memory is pretty clear as fewer and fewer motherboards with DDR2 memory support are hitting the market today compared to a year or two ago. DDR3 memory on the AMD platform requires AM3 CPUs. The extra memory resulted in increased performance in 3DMark Vantage and 06 over a slower AMD Phenom II X4 940 using DDR2 memory. MSI has put together a solid package in the form of the MSI 790GX-G65 motherboard, with good features, excellent bundle and very decent overclocking the MSI board is an easy choice over some of the other 790GX boards with support for DDR3.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

Finally, our last AM3 790GX board came from MSI, which has a feature-list and layout that reminded us of MSI's 790FX board, the 790FX-GD70. The color scheme however is not its forte and given its mainstream nature, some of the features are scaled down from the 790FX version. In terms of performance, the MSI 790GX-G65 did not stand out from the rest. The auto-overclocking did not work successfully in our testing and our own manual attempt found it just a tad short of what the ASUS M4A78T-E managed.
