MSI 790FX-GD70 Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

Well the numbers look bleak for this board to be honest but the innovation, different design ideas, price, color scheme, complete stability, complete set of push buttons, quad Crossfire support, powered eSATA, dual LAN ports, sideways SATA ports, and so on are what won it over for me. Sometimes it's not all about numbers to make a great board. It has to be an all in one package and when you start to push voltages and clocks on this board it really shines like a well lapped heatsink. Since I typically use Nvidia I was left with a single GTX280 video card option and by using slick tricks I was able to do everything I wanted to out of this board and more.

It's not the cheapest AM3 board out there, but if you're serious about having some fun and want eke the greatest potential out of the new AMD parts we're going to firmly direct our readers in the way of the MSI 790FX-GD70. It's not perfect, but it has the right combination that's attractive in usability, overclocking performance, aesthetics and price. Grab yourself an AMD Phenom II X3 720 or X4 955 Black Edition as well as one of these boards, look around for other GD70 owners, keep up with the latest BIOS developments, and above all, have a blast!

The MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard seems to be an extremely stable and solid platform for anyone looking to build a stock Phenom II system that shows to be an extremely energy efficient and cool running product. When you move into the enthusiast realm however, the MSI 790FX-GD70 seems to be a motherboard that can give you some great overclocking on the Front Side Bus front, but be prepared to become an expert in order to get there.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

In that context, at £130 MSI's 790FX-GD70 has a fight on its hands for relevancy. Sure, it sports AMD's top 790FX chipset, four-way CrossfireX multi-GPU support and plenty of fringe benefits including memory profiles up to DDR3 2,133MHz and an on-board switch for BIOS-free overclocking larks.

Fudzilla‘s review Edit

For some time we did not see a real AMD high-end board. This board of course is not perfect as we have discussed in the layout section, but despite that, MSI really improved BIOS, even adding features after a product was already released making it fantastic. We hope in future MSI will improve their layout, so a debug LED can also be used on Crossfire platforms and we hope to see an official BIOS which does unlock all X2 and X3s unofficially. We will keep you informed if that has happened with new BIOS versions. Besides that, there is no reason not to recommend this board.

The MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard left us wanting... wanting more for the price, wanting better performance and certainly wanting a board that we can overclock...

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

Frankly, we had our doubts about MSI's motherboards in the past, from the way it was playing catch-up with some of its rivals in certain aspects of its board designs. With the 790FX-GD70, we have to say that this has been one of the more impressive designs from the company for a while. In our view, this MSI board has the right balance of features and technologies.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

Overall MSI has created a very competitive board with the 790FX-GD70. It features an excellent layout, well designed functional cooling system, CrossFireX support with four PCI-E x16 slots, excellent overclocking ability and useful features like the innovative OC Dial. While many users may be better served by cheaper 790GX based solutions like MSI's DKA790GX, those of you looking for a high-end enthusiast board to pair up with your brand new AM3 Phenom II processor should definitely consider the MSI 790FX-GD70.
