MSI 890FXA-GD70 Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

MSI’s 890FXA-GD70 is a fantastic premium board at a very reasonable price. For $169 USD (w/ $20 rebate) you get Phenom II X6 support out of the box, Quad CrossFireX support, a usable PCI slot when using CrossFire, a Crosshair IV contender, and appealing aesthetics that complete the package.

With a price of around $200 CDN, ($200 USD, £130 GBP) at launch, the AMD 890FX-based MSI 890FXA-GD70 motherboard is a solid foundation for anyone looking to build a powerful multi-videocard gaming system. This board has lots of room for expansion and is good on the future-proofing front. Combining it with an AMD Phenom II X6 processor and a Radeon HD 5800-series videocard as part of AMD's Vision platform will make a system worthy for pretty much any performance enthusiast or gamer.

MSI 890FXA-GD70 is not the cheapest socket AM3 motherboard based on AMD890FX chipset available on the market. In fact, if you are planning to have only one or two video cards, don’t need two Gigabit Ethernet ports, are not really into overclocking and don’t care about having a very high-end voltage regulator circuit, you are better off buying a more affordable product and saving some money.

bit-tech‘s review Edit

The MSI 890FXA-GD70 has a good layout with some great features – we’re always happy to see DrMOS because it works well, and the POST readout and clean layout are also boons. It’s also great to see core unlocking come to MSI motherboards, as you might be able to resurrect the disabled core of a Phenom X3 and get more performance for free. The five graphics slots will be attractive to a certain audience but at £170, the MSI 890FXA-GD70 doesn’t offer enough even for avid folders. For everyone else looking for an AMD upgrade, that Asus board is a much better buy, and looking better by the minute.

The MSI 890FX-GD70 motherboard is a powerful tool for the AMD hardware enthusiast. Considering AMD has already got its SATA 6Gbps implementation native and MSI has added on NEC's USB 3.0 controller, the MSI 890FX-GD70 is "future proof," at least till BullDozer. It has a very smart PCIe layout that caters to CrossFireX users and a CPU area that is about as clean as any you will ever see. The MSI 890FX-GD80 e-tails for $179.00 after MIR with Free Shipping.

As for overclocking, MSI didn’t’ let us hit the desired number. But despite all these drawbacks, it is a decent board, with slightly limited functionality, though.

A great-looking motherboard and one of a few to offer four graphics slots at its price point, but if neither of these are important to you there are cheaper alternatives.

The layout too appears to be well-thought out and we didn't find any instances where components could get in the way of each other. The way MSI manages to squeeze that single SATA port in between the PCIe slots without interfering is a case in point. Our impression so far: this is a board to look out for.

Overall it is an excellent board at a very competitive price. MSI did a very nice job on this one, and I am seriously considering using this particular board as the basis for upgrading my primary machine (it is running one of the first 790FX AM2+ motherboards with the not-so-impressive SB600 southbridge). So with that particular recommendation, it is a no brainer that it receives the Gold Award from PCPer.com.

PC Pro‘s review Edit

If you need the versatility offered by the MSI's numerous sockets, slots and connectors then this is one of the few AMD-based boards to offer such a wealth of features. And, although it's expensive by AM3 standards, it's still much cheaper than the Intel equivalent.
