While the Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L is not nearly as fancy as the GA-P35-DS3S, it's a darn nice motherboard that uses Intel's new P31 Chipset yet only costs about $75 USD. The only concern we had about the motherboard's layout was the position of the FDD connector (for those still using floppy disk drives) and possibly the 4-pin ATX12V connector when using a larger heatsink. The GA-P31-DS3L had no problems with the recent versions of Fedora and Ubuntu tested nor did it have problems competing with and in some instances outperforming the Intel P965 Chipset.

To get both 8-channel audio and Gigabit Ethernet on a board that costs under fifty quid is impressive enough, but when you add in support for all the latest Intel processors including the 1333MHz FSB ones, then Gigabyte's GA-P31-DS3L becomes a very desirable board for those with shallow pockets who don't need or want the huge feature list of some of the more expensive boards available.

Of the two platforms, we’re actually more impressed with the Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L board. This board is actually less expensive and is based on older technology with its ICH7 Southbridge. However, despite the technology limitations, this board delivers (for the most part) identical performance to that of more expensive P35 Express boards. Gigabyte’s experience in the enthusiast market drifts down and we can certainly feel the effects on this board, as Gigabyte offers a much more flexible BIOS configuration (especially in regards to memory speeds) and provides a much more enjoyable overclocking experience.
