The IN80 walked away with our Product of the Year gong back in 2008, but, after price rises for the products of that vintage, InFocus slipped out of view. The £3000 SP8602 marks the company’s return to the big screen. It’s not the easiest on the eye – a big rectangle designed to be strapped to your ceiling. But, for £200 a pop, you can choose one of four other ‘skins’: matt white, gloss black, walnut or a pre-primed customable casing.

In terms of image quality with Blu-ray discs in its best out of the box and calibrated settings the InFocus offers excellent image quality with strong blacks and very good colour accuracy. It also offers a unique chassis which while big and bulky can be customised to suit your cinema room with ease. So overall the InFocus SP8602 offers a solid performance from the single DLP projection camp and we recommend you add it to your demo list.

In other words, once you've managed to get the SP8602 set up, the only thing you'll really notice for the vast majority of the time is a picture performance that's as good as anything the mid-range projector scene has ever produced.

The InFocus ScreenPlay SP8602 is a home theatre projector with great colour reproduction abilities. It is designed for long-term installation and its lamp life is shorter than we'd hope for, but for outright image quality it's among the best we've seen.

Once you’ve worked round some slight set-up limitations, the SP8602 will reward your perseverance with a truly stellar picture performance well worth the £3,000 asking price. Here’s hoping, then, that InFocus doesn’t take another two years to get its next projector out!
