ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

The AMD 890 GX chipset put simply is a great addition to the already impressive AMD chipset line. It further improves the capabilities of the SB750 with a new version titled SB850. The SB 850 adds SATA 6Gb/s support, which is nice to see since almost every Intel board now includes this technology. This really shows that AMD is committed to enthusiasts even though they aren't overpowering Intel's i7, they still provide some of the best technologies to AMD users. We saw here today that the SB850 is not a huge leap in overclocking like the SB750 was, but was anyone truly expecting that much of a difference? If you where then you've probably come to the realization that the new SB hasn't drastically increased overclocking potential.

When all is said and done, the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard shapes up into a very complete MediaPC/HTPC platform. Particularly when matched with AMDs value-oriented quad-core AMD socket AM3 processors. Given a retail price of $180 CDN, ($155 USD, £95 GBP) for the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard, I think it's good value - if - SATA 6gb/s and USB 3.0 are on your list of must-have's.

Talking specifically about ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3, its main feature besides the SATA-600 ports is USB 3.0 ports. It also provides three different types of video outputs and therefore should please all sorts of users, like the user building an HTPC and the user that wants a system with the latest technologies and doesn’t mind having a low-end gaming performance or wants to try the on-board graphics from AMD 890GX before deciding if he or she will need an add-on video card. And also overclockers from all levels, as this motherboard provides several overclocking options.

The new 890GX chipset and SB850 Southbridge bring native SATA 6Gbps support, a better GPU for media playback and apparently massive overclockability. Stock performance from the Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 was on par with what we expected, and its overclocking performance was solid. Even the niggles with the PCI-E bandwidth didn’t prevent the board from being reasonably fast in games. With USB 3 also integrated on the board, and the neat layout (even though tall DIMMs and large CPU coolers may clash), this is a great board for getting the most out of your Phenom II or Athlon II CPU.

This board is our first experience of Asus's new Core Unlocker tech. AMD has removed support for unlocking hidden CPU cores with the new 8 Series chipset, so Asus has developed a workaround. We can confirm it works splendidly, transforming our puny little Phenom II X2 into a fully functioning and ludicrously cheap quad-core beast. Maybe those AMD chips aren't so bad after all.

ASUS has once again shown its engineering prowess in the motherboard realm with the M4A89GTD PRO/USB3. It is cool, it is stable, it is one fine overclocker with all the forward looking features you could care to have. It is currently priced at $139.99 with Free Shipping. We think this exhibits an extremely good value for this motherboard. If you are feeling adventuresome, pick up a $100 (with Free Shipping) AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition "Dual Core" processor and see if you get lucky unlocking the two other cores. We got lucky 7 out of 8 times giving us a scorchingly fast quad core Motherboard/CPU configuration for less than $250.

HEXUS‘s review Edit

ASUS's implementation - retailing at under £130 with USB 3.0 - is particularly attractive, with a number of tweaking tools featured as standard. Core Unlocker, specifically, will appeal to the value-seekers out there, although results will be hit-or-miss. If a decent IGP, SATA 6Gbps and USB 3.0 are features on your shopping list, 890GX and ASUS's M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard fits the bill.

If you are looking for a great board with plenty of features for a new build or are considering upgrading to the latest and greatest technology, definitely look to the new AMD 890GX / SB850 chipset and if you are wanting a killer board with that chipset you would not go wrong with, the ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 motherboard, with a price of $155, is one of the top board that will be on the market for the AMD processors.

Choosing among the offerings from the leading mainboard makers, we'd recommend you to consider the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 in the first place. Although not without some peculiarities, this mainboard has a lot of indisputable benefits such as a handy design, low power consumption, broad options to control system fans, the technology to unlock disabled CPU cores, and excellent CPU overclocking features. The relatively high price is the only reason why we cannot call this mainboard perfect.

Overall, if you are an AMD owner and are looking to move forward with AMD this is the board for you. I have to say that AMD is now moving their chipsets up to match their GPU performance. I guess the next stop is the CPU. If they can do that then we will have an excellent combination in their three products. And for around $160 this is particularly good value considering the higher $200 price tag on Intel H57 boards.

A versatile and decent - if slightly quirky - board, if you're going the AMD route and want a future-proof option, the Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 is definitely worth keeping in mind.

The most high profile and favorite in this roundup is the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3. The new Core Unlocker feature will be a big selling point, especially since we haven't seen anything comparable from its rivals. The layout is the best among the three and perhaps the best of all the 890GX boards we have tested personally.

TechSpot‘s review Edit

Finally, while we focused a lot on chipset features and performance, the Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 proved to be an excellent board and is likely the best AM3 product we have had the pleasure of working with. From the board design to the features that are supported, we have been left with a pleasant impression. Should the price come closer to the $140 they are currently asking for the M4A78T-E, the more we feel the M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 could be the real deal on a feature vs. cost basis.

Now talking about the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard... overall I really like it. All my testing was using a beta BIOS with a beta Catalyst driver set, which the occasional quirks did pop-up, but that's to be expected when something so new is released. I'm sure the bugs will get ironed out pretty quick, especially when the full Catalyst 10.3 drivers are released. I did find it a little odd with the VGA switch card and using the 2nd PCIe slot as the "primary", but that is just how it works with this board.
