ASUS M4A78T-E Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

All in all, we enjoyed the Asus M4A78T-E. We also enjoyed the M3A78T. Both were very capable motherboards. We went back to the M3A78T and were able to get the M3A78T to clock the Phenom II X3 720 to 3.7 GHz, but were unable to get it stable at 3.8 GHz like the M4A78T-E. Apparently, we were right about more experience on the platform being beneficial to our overclocking skills.

Currently, AMD's socket AM3 Phenom II processors don't see much improvement with DDR3 memory. Once faster Phenom II processors come out for socket AM3, higher clock speeds may start becoming bottlenecked by DDR2's limited bandwidth and lower frequencies. If on the other hand you're looking towards the long term and have decided DDR3 is the best route to follow for your intended application, the ASUS M4A78T-E is a worthy motherboard to consider.

If Asus engineers manage to eliminate these issues in their upcoming BIOS versions, we will have an excellent, almost universal mainboard. If not, then Asus M4A78T-E will just remain a good board, working stably in nominal mode, but capable of modest CPU overclocking.

Frankly, the only thing that prevents us from giving this product our Dam Good Award is the DDR3 memory format, and the knowledge that it has a fraternal twin that supports DDR2 and is a good $20-25 cheaper, the M4A78-E. Otherwise, it is a universally good motherboard and a model that we have no qualms recommending to those hell-bent on making the transition to DDR3.

The Asus M4A78T-E is a superb match for Phenom II as the integrated graphics do a fine job and you can upgrade to CrossFire with the minimum of hassle.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

ASUS' only entry at the moment for the Socket AM3 790GX platform emerged as the best performer in our benchmarks. The difference in scores may not be the most convincing, but consistently, the ASUS M4A78T-E has shown that it can perform. The build quality is what we have expected from ASUS, though compared to some of the company's premium models, the M4A78T-E is strictly mainstream. Of course, that did not prevent the company from adding its proprietary technologies and software and there are quite a number of them found on this board. Whether you'll find them useful will vary on the individual's needs.
