ASUS Maximus III Formula Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

The Asus Maximus 3 not only gave us an amazing 4.5GHz overclock, we achieved that overclock in just under 20 minutes and it was just too easy to reach that massive speed. The features on the Maximus 3 all worked perfectly and we spent several weeks trying to find one that didn't work and we failed at that. You have to love a motherboard that every single feature works perfectly on.

I don't think Asus quite nailed this one: it needs to be the whole package, and with crappy SATA ports, overclocking that isn't quite the pinnacle of performance and a high price, it doesn't quite all pull together. That said, it's still very, very good and if you're unconcerned by the prices and these small criticisms, and are set on an LGA1156 system rather than 1366, then this shouldn't disappoint you.

So it's every inch the gamer's P55 board of choice. With a host of other extras like the auto-overclock on both RAM and CPU taking the hassle out of the whole process, if you're not even vaguely interested in getting elbow-deep in BIOS, the Maximus III Formula ticks all the boxes.

The ASUS Maximus III Formula is a heck of a nice motherboard. And it comes with a heck of a price; about $245. Quite simply, if you find some the motherboard’s exclusive features a "must have," then you will likely see a good value in the ASUS Maximus III Formula. The ROG Connect alone might be worth $100 to many tweakers. However, if all the bells and whistles are not needed, it is hard to argue with the P55-GD65 from MSI that comes in around $155.

I found that the discrete card did not have any clearance issues with the three video cards I have used thus far in the Maximus III Formula. Priced at the higher end of the P55 chipset based board spectrum, it is still a good $150 less expensive than its X58 based brother, the Rampage II Extreme. What you get with the Maximus III Formula is a board that lives up to its ROG heritage, both in performance and overclocking.

AnandTech‘s review Edit

While it worked our ASUS Maximus III Formula board was a pleasure to use. In terms of overall features, BIOS design, and general desktop performance this board is rated at the top of our list. Unfortunately, the board did not respond as well as the EVGA or Gigabyte boards in extreme overclocking conditions. Our experience with the large cascade was not trouble free as it refused to post once the evaporator head temperature was below -110 degrees.

Once you do have the motherboard installed, you will experience what we discovered is one of the fastest and best overclocking P55 motherboards that we've come across so far. It's not a great deal better than the P7P55D Deluxe in those two areas, but every little bit helps. This is especially true given the fact that the Maximus III Formula really isn't that much more expensive than other high-end P55 motherboards, especially for a Republic of Gamers model. Compared to the P7P55D Deluxe for example, the MIIIF carries a mere $20-30 price premium. That's pretty good in our eyes, especially since you are getting the SupremeFX X-Fi audio module and the intangible pride of RoG ownership.

Overall, Asus Maximus III Formula is not a bad solution, but at the same time not a very good one either. Maybe we should wait for Asus Maximus IV Formula or maybe even Asus Maximus V Formula…

tweaktown‘s review Edit

Maximus III is the third board in the Maximus series to support Intel based processors with some of the highest features available today. ASUS really has put alot of work into the board and the results say a huge amount for it. With a price tag that matches that of the GIGABYTE P55A at 250 U.S. Dollars over at Newegg, it's a comparable board depending on your needs and wants.

motherboards‘s review Edit

ASUS motherboards have always been a favorite among the enthusiast crowd and us reviewers here at motherboards.org as they offer a high degree of overclocking features and the ability to tweak their boards that is second to none. In terms of features the ASUS Maximus III Formula board delivers with their CPU Level Up and MemPerfect features setting them apart from the competition. The Maximus III Formula is a solid Editors Choice as the performance is there as well as great features. Also with so many new boards on the market, I am sure we will see even better boards by ASUS and the other manufactures as time rolls by.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

There's nothing much to fault ASUS here with the Maximus III Formula. If we had to nitpick, it's that ASUS is trying too hard. No doubt, the company has a reputation to maintain and its ROG series have always pushed the limits with new features. This time, the new ROG Connect failed to connect with us as we couldn't see it being useful to enthusiasts. It adds on to the other hit or miss features that ASUS has implemented on its ROG boards so far.

A superb board, but we feel it's just too expensive for a socket 1156 motherboard. Given the same £180 budget we'd take a socket 1366 solution every time for its superior performance, flexibility and upgrade options.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

Like the Intel board pictured on the previous page, the Asus Maximus III Formula is built around a dark colored PCB, but with red, white, and black accents. It has four DDR3 DIMM slots for dual-channel memory configurations, and each slot has an interesting retention clip configuration. If you look close, you'll see that the retention clips closest to the expansion slots are much smaller than those on the opposite side.
