ASUS Maximus III Extreme Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

When we received the Asus Maximus 3 Extreme we had high expectations for it, and the Maximus 3 Extreme surpassed them. We like the layout on the board and the fact that Asus designed it to cover multiple use scenarios. By that we mean it's not just a stripped-down, tricked-out overclockers board. They gave it more bandwidth on the PCI-E slots and you can get 16x 16x 8x running triple GPU's in SLI/Crossfire. You can run 5 GPU's and still get 8x speed on all of them.

But it's worth noting that it doesn't provide an advantage in the quick and dirty overclocking stakes. All of which makes the Maximus III an incredibly desirable but ultimately hard-to-justify novelty.

The ASUS Maximus III Extreme is probably the most feature rich motherboard we have ever seen. It is an awe inspiring motherboard for the enthusiast on the edge. That of course begs the question, "How many of us need to overclock our motherboards from a separate computer or our smart phones?" On the other hand you will be USB 3.0 and Sata 6Gbps ready.

Great performance, looks, and charm: what more could you ask for? Asus comes out swinging with their overbuilt Maximus III Extreme.

We have to say, we’ve found the Maximus III Extreme a pleasure to use. It’s got stability in abundance, keeps up with the likes of EVGA when overclocked and then goes further in the ease of use department by offering a comprehensive and well-polished BIOS (0705 release).

The ASUS Maximus III Extreme is a damn nice board. It has quite a bit of headroom in it. I was a little disappointed that we could not push farther, but our DDR3 choice would not post over 1440 MHz; it would crash as Windows was loading. We do want to take another look at the Maximus III Extreme once we have some higher end DDR3 and also the final shipping BIOS.

This conclusion should come to no surprise to anyone who is familiar with ASUS' Republic of Gamers product line, since they keep on getting better and better. The Maximus III Extreme is no exception since it is easily the most well designed motherboard to have ever come through our labs. Not only does it feature SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0, and Bluetooth, but it looks downright awesome. The layout is effectively perfect as well, packing 5 PCI-E x16 slots onto a regular ATX form factor without making any compromises as to the accessibility of the various ports, buttons, headers, voltage readouts, etc.
