GIGABYTE GA-EX58-EXTREME (rev. 1.0) Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

So what does $70 extra gets you? For $70 extra, the Gigabyte X58-Extreme board gets you two extra SATA ports, one additional network port, and the large chipset heatsink with the ability to watercool the system. Is it worth the $70 extra? In our opinion, it does not if you plan to stay with air cool. If you have no plan to watercool your computer, we would suggest you pick the X58-UD4P or if you need the extra network and SATA ports, go for the UD5P from Gigabyte, which features the same ports sans the watercooling block.

Gigabyte EX58 Extreme is certainly one of the more complete motherboards for Core I7 processors available on the market today. It brings several advantages over its competitors if you want extreme overclocking levels using the new Intel processors.

Gigabyte has produced a fine motherboard in the EX58-Extreme. It is questionable whether or not it commands the $30 price premium over the EX58-UD5. These two EX58 model boards are identical except for the fancy northbridge cooler on the Extreme. I have seen some folks say the UD5 has less power phases, but both boards have 12 + 2 + 2 phase power from what I can tell. While it is no doubt the Extreme northbridge cooling works great, it is still not seen as needed now that the memory controller has been integrated into the Core i7 processor.

Those of you who usually read only the introduction and conclusion shouldn’t really worry too much about the previous paragraph. What I am trying to say, Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 and GA-EX58-Extreme are good boards, although not completely flawless. But is there a product that is? Our tests proved that these platforms work well not only in the nominal mode but also during overclocking.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

Performance-wise, little separated these three boards and the scores were all rather close. After all, these are likely the best boards for its class. Taking that into account, the other factors, the temperature and power consumption results came into play and with that, the Gigabyte GA-EX58-EXTREME had the advantage. It was slightly better than MSI's GreenPower but it did best in the temperature segment by a large margin. Perhaps this is the Ultra Durable 3 at work.

We'd like to thank our friends at Gigabyte for providing the GA-EX58-Extreme motherboard for our review today. This high-end motherboard is intricately designed for extreme overclockers as its name states, but I think other intermediate PC enthusiasts can also take advantage of a lot of its overclocking and power features.
