ASUS Rampage II Gene Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

Even I have to admit I am rather surprised at the performance this little ASUS Rampage II GENE motherboard had to offer me, especially considering that this "is" a micro ATX design motherboard. I did not have much hope for this motherboard to perform as well or even as good, for that matter, as the other much larger X58 variants offered. ASUS not only made a great performing motherboard with the ASUS Rampage II GENE, they packed on such a small form factor motherboard features that only the "Bigger Brothers" get.

The bottom line is that if you fancy a small build but you can't live without your high performance hardware, the Rampage II Gene should certainly make the shortlist.

ASUS has built what is likely the ultimate enthusiast board in a Micro ATX form factor. The market for the GENE will be like its footprint, small. That said, you already know if a motherboard like this is of interest to you. No doubt though, if you are in the market for a Micro ATX form factor motherboard that is packed full of enthusiast features, the ASUS Rampage II GENE should be at the top of your very short list.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

By Christmas, when I expect small form factor graphics cards from major manufacturers and a lower price tag for the board itself, this would get a four-and-a-half star score. As the market currently stands, it's a slightly redundant mobo.

ASUS has identified a niche in the high-end desktop market and the Rampage II GENE fills it well, augmenting the existing line-up with aplomb. It's recommend on the proviso that space - or lack thereof - is the most important criterion in your purchasing decision. Now we just wait for a sub-£150 version for the upcoming Core i5 chips.

I am extremely impressed with the Asus Rampage II GENE and recommend it without reservation to anyone looking for a uATX board. I also recommend it to people just looking to get into overclocking, because with the temp monitors you can OC on auto, see what the board sets, and then work from there! Asus has out-done themselves with the Rampage II GENE, which holds to its Republic of Gamers branding to the roots.

This Core i7 board has plenty of features including a Creative X-Fi sound processor, but it's expensive.

Software aside, there isn't much else we can complain about. The issues we encountered with the Elpida Hyper based memory kits can hopefully be cleared up with BIOS updates. We are confident the ASUS ROG team will be able to accomplish this task in a rather short period of time. The overclocking results speak for themselves and the ability for the little Rampage II Gene to handle such a huge system load that our overclocked i7 965 processor threw at it is commendable.

As for the actual Asus Rampage II Gene mainboard discussed today, it turned out an extreme success. Pretty good accessories bundle, smart and convenient layout despite small size, excellent BIOS functionality, superb CPU and memory overclocking potential – all these things command respect and change the way we take this small microATX mainboard.

At 249.99 USD from Newegg you do get a pretty solid package for your money and we have no hesitation in recommending the board to any Core i7 user who is looking for a good feature packed offering, especially if power saving is an important factor. So far ASUS is on the top of the list as the best all round choice.

The Rampage II Gene shares its DNA with the Rampage II Extreme, offering similar superb performance at a considerably lower price. Add in the potential to stuff all that power into an even smaller space than is usually possible and you have a motherboard we really rather like.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

Best of all, the price has been reduced, with the Rampage II Gene going for US$250. It's still not cheap by any measure and one can get a less premium and less expensive X58 model from ASUS, not to mention other brands. Yet, for those who desire the overclocking of the Rampage II Extreme, here's a chance to get the smaller version at a US$100 discount. For the rest of us not into the extreme features, the Gene is still a trifle too much for less, even if we find its lean features refreshing.

ITreviews‘s review Edit

Asus's Rampage II Gene is the first microATX board we have seen that supports Intel's high-end CPU and associated chipset, and it must be said it's the most feature-rich small board we have seen too. The only thing missing is perhaps an onboard HDMI port which would only add to what is already a pretty imposing price tag.

TechSpot‘s review Edit

The experience we had overclocking our Core i7 processor was also very satisfactory. The 3.60GHz and 4.0GHz configurations were not overclocked "by us", rather we simply used the Asus CPU Level Up function which can be accessed via the BIOS or even the OS. For all the reasons above, it's hard not to be blown away by the Rampage II GENE kind of execution. Not everyone will be pleased to shell out $260 for it, and availability could be less tricky, but in the end it's probably worth it if you want a top notch mATX motherboard. The Rampage II GENE deserves our Outstanding product award.
