ASUS Rampage II Extreme Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

What did we learn from this review/article? The ASUS Rampage II Extreme paired up with Intel's Core i7 920 is a lethal combination to have. What makes the ASUS Rampage II Extreme motherboard even sweeter deal is that it will be able to handle Intel's upcoming CPU line of Hex cores. So if you are one of those types that need the extra power that only a multi-threaded CPU can give, the Rampage II Extreme is a definite winner.

The ASUS Rampage II Extreme will likely be over-priced or under-valued by many. If read over the feature lists and discussion and did not have a specific feature jump out and grab you as must-have, then this is likely not the motherboard for you. However, if you want the baddest, craziest, feature laden Core i7 motherboard that we will likely see this year, the Rampage II Extreme is it.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

In performance terms, the Asus Rampage II Extreme destroys the P45. Our test with Corsair's triple-channel kit achieved an outstanding 27Gb/s throughput, with memory read speeds clocking in at 16Gb/s, which is over twice the figure supported by P45. This might be the first of a new breed, but its price is enough to make you feel faint. There's no arguing with the performance figures, but we can't help feeling that there are too many frivolous features being used to justify the price tag.

Staying true to its Republic of Gamers branding, the Rampage II Extreme takes care of its own by including X-Fi audio, SLI and Crossfire support, plenty of fan headers, three thermal probes, and even comes stock with a water cooling-ready design over the chipset! The only drawback to having so many features is the size; the RIIE is one inch wider than standard ATX boards. It is a very tight squeeze. Also, I would have liked to see a detachable design for the Extreme OC controls, but those are miniscule quarrels to have with a board that is quite possibly the fastest, most fully fitted board on the market. If you are looking for the very best all around performance for your Socket 1366 system, look no further than the Rampage II Extreme!

The ASUS Rampage 2 Extreme is the ultimate enthusiast motherboard with more tweaking options than you can shake a stick at. Providing incredible stability even when pushing the envelope, the R2E is at the top of the heap if you're looking for the best of the best.

AnandTech‘s review Edit

That board is the ASUS Rampage II Extreme featuring the soon to be released X58 chipset supporting an i7 processor. Designed for a very niche market and with limited production numbers, this board will be ASUS' primary weapon in the ultra high-end market against some stiff competition from Gigabyte and perhaps others. The Rampage "2 the" Extreme board is the latest and greatest contribution from the Republic of Gamers (ROG) design group.

This is a lovely motherboard that delivers everything you need as well as a few features that are frivolous. Our only reservations centre on the occasions when we broke Windows Vista and, yes, that astronomical price.

Rampage II Extreme is the latest in the ROG series, something that ASUS really puts a lot of pride into. And with all that effort and R&D comes a price tag to match. However, if you're one who can afford a Core i7 along with dual GPUs then you're not going to care or skimp on the board. The Rampage II Extreme lives up to the same level of excellence that ASUS puts into all its ROG boards.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

Coupled with the many overclocking and other premium features, all three boards are basically overkill for the general public. But then, they are not meant for the mainstream users. These are toys for the boys, the ones with multiple graphics cards (and multiple credit cards). For that, there's just no matching the ASUS Rampage II Extreme for its sheer number of overclocking friendly tools. This is the board for the enthusiast and they should have many rewarding hours with it. It also proved that it's not just about the features, as it had the highest base clock overclock in our test. Therefore, there was no doubt that it would receive our overclocking award.

It's hard to really come to one single conclusion about the ASUS Rampage II Extreme motherboard. It is without a doubt the most impressive consumer motherboard I have ever tested in terms of sheer performance, features and overclockability. The high quality on-board audio, detailed BIOS, CPU tweaking options and even the on-board multimeter testing areas really stand out from the entire market of motherboards, not just the current X58 options.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

At first glance, the ASUS Rampage II Extreme seems to be an interesting mix of form and function. Aesthetically speaking, ASUS' Republic of Gamers boards not only perform on a top level, but look the part as well. The color scheme, layout, and long list of features and new TweakIt / ProbeIt tools make this board an interesting choice to build a new system around.
