Asus has bundled in a USB-powered, PDA-like external display/controller, from which you can monitor performance and do some mild overclocking. It's beyond futile, but a deal-sweetener for case-modders. However, you can grab a P6T without the unit for £50 less. Other than that, it's pretty much on a par with the other X58, though its BIOS overclocking options are much more basic. That said, it squeezed a little more from our air-cooled Core i7 before falling over.

If you are in the market for a Core i7 system, the ASUS P6T Deluxe is a superb motherboard that oozes quality from every component and has compelling features that other boards do not, which help to justify a slightly higher price. Uncompromising stability and speed don’t always come cheap; if you buy the best the first time, you only cry once.

We have to give the ASUS board a huge rap; it's extremely feature rich, has a reasonable overclock on offer at this early stage and with CrossfireX and SLI graphics support, there is something here for everyone.

The Asus P6T Deluxe delivers good performance and a decent list of features but it is hard work to overclock your Core i7 to the max and that makes us less than enthusiastic about this model.

ASUS makes two X58 boards, the extreme high-end Rampage II and the more mainstream P6T series. As noted earlier, there are two P6T variants: the P6T Deluxe and P6T Deluxe / OC Palm Edition. We took a look at the OC Palm edition, with its nifty little external LCD display. This board has six DDR3 memory sockets, and can handle up to 12GB of DDR3 memory.
