Without taking into consideration the small issues with the phone's build finishes, the Desire HD has almost a stellar design. If not for the pieces of plastic and that cover different part of the device, this would have been a 10 out of 10. However, there's another problem that makes the phone less appealing than its big size, and that's the crappy battery. If you can get past this, HTC Desire HD is powerful Android smartphone that offers great functionality.

If you fear the 4.3 inches worth of screen might too big for your hand or pocket or think that 768MB of RAM is a bit of an overkill, you should definitely try the phone out before shelling out the cash. If you find out you like it, or if you have your heart set on getting the a top feature package, then the HTC Desire HD is one of the handful phones that fit the job description and definitely deserves serious consideration.

Still, the Desire HD is a gorgeous bit of kit that does all the things you could possibly ask of a smartphone and, photography aside, does them very well. With one of these in your pocket you won't ever need a tablet, a media player or an e-book reader, but you will need a spare battery.

The HTC Desire HD is a huge smartphone with a screen best suited to multimedia, web browsing and text creation and reading. However, it isn't for those who have small pockets or for those with small hands who won't be able to reach right across the screen for one-handed use.

The HTC Desire HD is the top phone in HTC’s Desire Series. The 8.0 megapixel digital camera makes it possible to always take very nice photos. It is especially nice to display the photos on the phone itself. For the Android fans among us, the HTC Desire HD is a true gem.

The Desire HD is a great Android smartphone, probably one of the best we have tested to date. The HTC Sense UI makes it a pleasure to use, and everything seems to work well and flow together. It is definitely well built, and feels like a quality smartphone. The size may take a little getting used to if you have only used a standard size smartphone before, one you get used to it the 4.3 inch display is great.

Our preference was not based on the screens either – despite that we'd personally take the Super AMOLED before an LCD of the same resolution any day, the sheer size of the one on the HTC Desire HD is also quite appealing. We have to admit that the new HTC Sense UI almost tipped the scales for us, with its fast boot, amazing personalization options, cloud-based services and offline navigation functionalities.

So what to make of the Desire HD? It's undeniably hampered by some design flaws and poor battery life, but the sheer volume of good things it brings to the table can't be ignored. Froyo is the most polished and accomplished version of Android by a good margin, HTC's latest Sense enhancements add legitimate value to the proposition, and the aluminum unibody construction, upgraded internals, and jumbo screen are unignorably appealing.

The HTC Desire HD is more of an exciting phone than it is a perfect phone. We're as excited about how HTC are evolving Sense UI, as we are about the hardware. As it happens though, the hardware and software are married into a wonderful mix, so well done, HTC. You're not really getting the best of anything. The Nokia N8 has a much better camera, the Samsung Galaxy S has a richer screen of a similar size and the iPhone 4 has a way better app support. What the HTC brings together however is the best amalgamation of everything, with a mouth watering injection of innovation to go with it. It's certainly one of our favourite candy bar Android devices at the moment.

HTC has become synonymous with Android smartphones over the past three years, and with good reason. The company’s Sense interface remains the most comprehensive reworking of the core OS to-date, and in this latest iteration has gone from being a simple social network aggregator and redesign, to a real value-add for HTC users. The bundled Sense-online experience not only works to the user’s benefit, but is a clever move by HTC to promote brand loyalty.

So there is certainly no shortage of features on the Desire HD - and there will never be the space to cover everything in this review - as well as all the benefits of Android 2.2 sitting behind it with its app offering that is rapidly gaining on Apple’s App Store - beef up the gaming selection and we’d have a real contest.

All of which brings us to our conclusion. What's clear about the Desire HD is that it isn't perfect. We feel its screen is unnecessarily large and though very good isn't the best quality on the market, its battery life isn't the best either, its still not quite as slick as the iPhone and there are a few other small tweaks we'd like. However, none of these issues is enough to change the fact that as an overall package this is the best smartphone we've tested. Extra functions like the presence of Flash in the web browser put it above the iPhone 4 while its build quality and design puts it ahead of the Android competition.

There's plenty to like about the HTC Desire as it sports some cool features that aren't available on the previous Android models like the HTC Desire or Legend, or Nexus One: namely, a large 4.3-inch screen, DLNA support, large storage space of 1.5GB and better camera output. With the well functioning and updated HTC Sense and a complimentary suite of web services, the HTC Desire HD looks set to be a rather worthy upgrade option.

Let's get the hardware out of the way first and the clear headliner here is the Desire HD. Externally it brings the beautiful aluminium finish of the HTC Legend to the Desire (a much anticipated transition) and the good news is it feels every bit as luxurious as its predecessor though doesn't perhaps have quite the same visual 'bling'. More practically it should bring greater durability and be less prone to scratches than the Desire, though only time will tell. As for size and weight at 123 x 68 x 11.8mm it still feels comfortable in hand, though the aluminium body does place it on the very edge of being too heavy at 164g - substantially more than the 135g Desire.

The HTC Desire HD is understandable going to be a desirable handset. If you thought the first Desire couldn't be bettered, then think again. The size may be an issue for some, but with the general trend drifting towards larger devices, we can see it being amazingly popular. Fortunately we've already been told it is coming to all networks in the UK, with the exception of O2 in the short-term (we don't know why, we suspect some sort of other deal is being done with O2). From our hands-on time with the Desire HD the performance did impress, but having been spoilt by Apple and Samsung with their impressive rival displays, you will have some decisions to make.
