ASUS Eee PC 1201N (Seashell) Pro Reviews

expertreviews‘s review Edit

We wanted to like Asus' Ion netbook but it's an odd beast. Its dual core processor and Ion graphics make it more powerful than a netbook, but not enough to justify its added expense and shorter battery life.

Engadget‘s review Edit

The 1201N is a new type of netbook - although we aren't even sure it should be called a netbook, since it's more like a full-fledged laptop. Regardless of what you call it, at $499 the Eee PC 1201N quelled our netbook frustrations by delivering a more comfortable computing experience and far superior multimedia performance than its 10-inch brethren.

AnandTech‘s review Edit

The rundown of the 1201N is that it provides good battery life, great multimedia aspects, adequate overall system performance, and borderline gaming. It does this in a package that's slightly larger than your typical netbook, but it's comparable to the 11.6" offerings. The 1201N is clearly superior to the 1005PE when it comes to multimedia capabilities, as it can handle anything up to and including 1080p H.264 content - be that x264, Blu-ray, or even Flash video.

The ASUS EeePC 1201N is the fastest netbook money can buy, but its tradeoff is battery life just 4 hours of it.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

While the 1201N fails to redefine the netbook market as dramatically as we would have hoped, it is the most powerful mini-laptop we've seen to date. With its large screen and dual-core power, however, we question whether it really qualifies as a netbook in the first place.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

In the end, there's a lot to like with the Asus Eee PC 1201n. The better keyboard and larger display in a package that's still thin and sleek are attractive, but we'd really like to see the price drop by about £80.

The ASUS Eee PC 1201N puts their Seashell netbooks on steroids by increasing size an performance across the board. With a dual core Intel Atom 330 and NVIDIA ION graphics with a 12-inch LCD, the 1201N offers some of the best performance a netbook has to offer and still offer respectable battery life all for under $500.

This netbook's dual-core processor and Ion graphics make it the fastest ever, but you'll sacrifice battery life.

Liliputing‘s review Edit

The Asus Eee PC 1201N is the first notebook with an Atom processor and NVIDIA ION graphics that I’ve tested that doesn’t feel slower than a typical 10 inch Atom powered netbook at day to day tasks. Sure, the HP Mini 311 and other ION-powered systems can play modern video games and stream HD video. But they’re kind of sluggish for web browsing. That’s not true with the Asus Eee PC 1201N, which is likely due to the dual core Atom 330 CPU.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

If you need a netbook now, there's no better one on the market today in our opinion. The Eee PC 1201N strikes the perfect balance of speed, battery life and size, and the stylish Seashell design doesn't hurt matters either. The only thing that left us wanting more was the noisy/slow hard drive and the lackluster right/left click bar, but if you pair up a Bluetooth mouse you can get around the latter. Otherwise, this is an outstanding machine from top to bottom. The build quality is top-notch, it's fast for a netbook, it's the one of the few netbook we've seen with some gaming prowess, and it handles up HD content with aplomb.

The Asus Eee 1201N is a good product that is well designed and very practical. It's a snappy little netbook that has a the distinction of being able to play HD content extremely well and allowing you to output it to full HD using the HDMI out. The Eee 1201N definitely has the shelf appeal, but its split identity and market position may confuse consumers. Hopefully articles like this will help you make the most of your purchase.

The Eee PC 1201n offers better video performance and a bigger screen than most netbooks, but at a cringe-worthy price.

Notebookcheck‘s review Edit

As far as netbooks are concerned, Asus has always taken pride in its pioneer role in the various fields. Asus has, however, surprisingly allowed itself plenty of time as to the topic of Ion, so a powerful GeForce 9400M graphic card combined with an Intel Atom CPU, as there are already comparable competitor models on the market. But Asus wouldn't be Asus if there wasn't the one or other feature slumbering in the case.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

As one of the few Netbooks with a dual-core Atom processor and Nvidia Ion graphics, the 12.1-inch EeePC 1201N has superior performance compared with most Atom-based machines, but any higher-level ULV thin-and-light will still do better.
