Sapphire HD 3870 512MB Pro Reviews

Tom's Hardware‘s review Edit

In the end, the Radeon HD 3870 is far from being a revolution, despite what its name and the Direct3D 10.1 compatibility might suggest. Anyway, thanks to its slightly higher clock, due to its greatly reduced process (55 nm), it manages to outgrow the HD 2900 XT on the majority of games, despite a smaller bandwidth (see averages next page), but it doesn't reach the level of the GeForce 8800 GT, which remains 11% superior when filters are disabled and 18% when they're enabled.

All in all, the Sapphire HD3870 Toxic is a good card with plenty of features, a great bundle, decent gaming performance and an innovative heatsink which is hamstrung by a loud cooler and somewhat unattractive pricing versus the competition. Sapphire did the best with what they received from ATI and we commend them for it.

This is something of a comeback for the ATI brand. AMD claimed the 3000 series would match the performance of the 2900s but be quieter, cooler and cheaper, and on that score it has achieved its aims admirably. No it isn't as fast as an 8800 GT, but it's priced accordingly, and for most games, certainly below 1,920 x 1,200, it's fast enough.
