If you do decide to plump for 3D, you’re likely to be very pleased. Killzone 3 (definitely the best 3D game so far) looks awesome, with the Sony dragging you into the action with the kind of detail that significantly enhances depth, which makes it easier to judge distances – and spot your lethal enemies. Again, there’s impressive levels of punch, but as we’ve found with other TVs, the Sony suffers from a degree of crosstalk that some people will find tiring. Our only other gripe is that the KDL-55NX813 sounds a bit thin, but what really keeps the Sony at four stars is the presence of some bigger, better all-round competition from the plasma brigade..

For too long now Sony has been resting on its laurels and relying too heavily on brand recognition, attractive design and aggressive marketing to sell displays. The Bravia KDL-55NX813 is a good example of this approach, it isn’t that it’s a bad display it’s just that at this price point it isn’t good enough.

So, there you have it: yet another fine Sony. If you’re chasing the best in performance, we’d recommend buying the HX903, even if it is smaller and more expensive – but the 55NX813’s charms are persuasive just the same.

This handsome set is a strong addition to Sony's lineup. The slimmer frame and narrower bezel are an improvement on the Monolithic Design, while the OptiContrast screen seems to improve the contrast and black level performance. Overall, the picture quality is very strong in 2D mode, which translates to a very plausible 3D output too. It's a shame the 3D transmitter isn't built into the set, but the reality is, you probably won't be watching much 3D content on it anyway.
