And the Canon SX130's wider 28mm equivalent 12x lens and the addition of 720p video with optical zoom make it a worthy successor to its predecessor, the SX120. With the warning about the slow autofocus and cycle times, we still give the Canon SX130 a Dave's Pick for its good image quality, easy demeanor, and range of customizable features.

Family friendly in terms of both operation and price, the SX130 IS will extend the photographic opportunities of anyone more used to happy snapping, without forcing them to confront a particularly steep learning curve like a compact system camera or DSLR might. The full-ish complement of manual controls are there if you want them, for when experience and desire to experiment grows. But, if not, it's a case of point and shoot all the way and generally you get decent results with the minimum of fuss and user input.

So the Canon PowerShot SX130 IS may not have all the bells and whistles, styling or cutting edge features of competitive models, but it undoubtedly offers fantastic value for money for such a big-brand camera, and is easily worthy of our Recommended award.

There’s a clear case to be made for the SX130, you can see it nestling in grandad’s pocket, ready for pictures of the kids where face detection, a decent flash and great skin tones will make it a winner, but also on hand for day trips on sight-seeing expeditions. The lens is a great asset. It scores a remarkable 1cm macro, yet delivers 28mm wide angle landscapes and over 300mm of telephoto reach, all with good sharpness and well-performing image stabilisation.

Canon's SX130 IS is a worthy new competitor in the superzoom ranks, offering good still image and 720p HD video quality along with automatic or manual shooting options, packaged in a fairly compact and light body at an attractive price. Shutter lag is good and autofocus acquisition time in good light is competitive.

Due to the success of the compact megazoom cameras, the Canon PowerShot SX130 IS appears a bit big and bulky. Indeed, the difference in dimensions is quite big and if the dimensions are important to you, you might prefer to look at some of the alternatives mentioned above. The advantage of the Canon SX130 IS’ format is that it is very comfortable to handle. This is great for photography and in combination with the effective optical stabilization, few shots turn out blurry. The Canon PowerShot SX130 IS is a fine, all-round megazoom camera with which you can capture almost any scene!

The Canon PowerShot SX130 IS will not disappoint those who've been holding off making a buying decision in the hope of a significant upgrade to the SX120 IS. It extends the zoom range from 10 to 12x, adds 2 Megapixels to the resolution, upgrades the video capability with a 720p HD mode and adds some new scene modes. This is a substantially more capable camera than the one it replaces.
