Data Robotics Drobo Pro Reviews

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

While the Drobo isn’t the fastest unit out there, its ability to allow users to effortlessly administer multiple external hard drives makes it handy for people with large storage needs. It’s faster and more flexible than the previous model, and if you’re someone who has such high demands on memory as to require a machine to organize your drives, you’ll likely need any speed upgrade you can get.

We got pretty good data transfer speeds, even faster than a standard USB hard disk, and the device was unfazed even when we unplugged one of the disks as it was being used (that's not to be recommended, though). It's an expensive backup device, but if your data is worth keeping, this is an excellent way to keep it.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

Performance isn't stellar - using it as a repository for television recordings was occasionally frustrating, thanks to sporadic drop-outs - and there's only a single USB port at the rear. Its fan can get noisy during rebuilding, too. It's also annoying how the drive reports its capacity to the host computer, although a recent firmware upgrade has helped mitigate this. And if things do go catastrophically wrong, we'd have more confidence in an independent company's ability to recreate data from a vanilla RAID setup than from Data Robotics' data schemes. But even with these niggles, it's still a fantastic data storage solution, and we want one.

The Drobo puts a new spin on storage and will appeal to a particular type of user. For us, we like our Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ too much to change. We want our iTunes server, FTP and HTTP servers, the other media streaming services, storage quotas and strict controls to network shares. However, that said, the Drobo does look a good choice for users that want fault tolerant storage, aren't bothered about bells and whistles and don't want to get their hands dirty with RAID.
