Excellent sound quality and now-rare audio recording features make the Cowon J3 a top buy for sound quality enthusiasts. However, navigation's not particularly intuitive and the additional "app" style features are gimmicky.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit Like Unlike

The Cowon J3 offers some new features that the older S9 missed out like memory card support, longer battery life and built-in speaker. It carries the same Cowon's traditional sound which is very good. Coupled with wide file format support and many other useful features, the J3 is one attractive PMP but with a rather high price tag. iPod Touch users may not like its lack of support for apps and WiFi, but its impressive media playback quality would lure sole PMP users.

However, it does seem to have a little more subtlety and finesse to it, with greater precision particularly in the bass. Indeed, with good-quality headphones (again, the supplied ones will get you going but aren’t marvellous) the combination of drive, extension and detail in the lower octaves is really very fine.

All the core strengths of the Cowon S9 are still in place, including superb sound and excellent video quality, while the addition of a memory expansion slot and improved battery life are very welcome. The wholly unexpected and unheralded appearance of support for H.264 video and AAC audio now makes the J3 one of the best PMPs on the market.
