Sapphire HD 4850 X2 2G/1G GDDR3 PCI-E Pro Reviews

motherboards‘s review Edit

The HED 4850 is an interesting beast of a video card. In terms of performance, the card is faster than the GTX 285 and faster than a single HD 4890 yet lacking against the HD 4870 x2 as is to be expected with the lower clocks and GDDR3 memory instead of the GDDR5 memory on the HD 4870 x2. In terms of price versus performance, the HD 4850 x2 from Sapphire is clearly a better value than many single chip video cards with solid performance across all benchmarks.

Hardcore gamers may find little added value in the Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 1GB right now. If its price were closer to $200 USD, to follow current price drops, it would be a far more attractive product, but at almost $260 it is simply overpriced.

The Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 2GB is an uneven performer. Some games love it, and some games don't. Some games can use the second GPU well, and some games can't. Some games can use the extra memory, and again, some don’t benefit.

ITreviews‘s review Edit

This is an undoubtedly powerful gaming video card but a lack of memory holds it back at the highest levels of detail. It is also considerably louder and more power-hungry than competing single-GPU solutions that will offer more predicable performance overall.

HotHardware‘s review Edit

In the end, the Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 is a solid performer with some interesting features. Just be aware of the potential issues we've pointed out if you're in the market for a graphics card of this type. If it's within your budget and you may make use of the additional outputs, the Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 isn't likely to disappoint.

The Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 2GB graphics card is an incredibly fast enthusiast solution that takes advantage of AMD's RV770 chip in a dual-GPU solution. AMD and Sapphire now have a card that is price competitive with the GeForce GTX 280 cards and is actually faster than NVIDIA's option in all of our gaming tests.

HEXUS‘s review Edit

Unlike the ridiculously-quick Radeon HD 4870 X2, though, the 4850 X2's performance lead isn't quite as clear cut. Indeed, when multi-GPU scaling doesn't live up to expectations, the card offers little more in terms of 1,920x1,200 performance when compared to a cheaper single-GPU solution such as NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 260.

Sapphire has done a good job with the card here today; performance is good, cooling is excellent and a nice bundle is offered. All we need now is the card to hit the market and we have another winner of a card based on the HD 4800 series GPU.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

Even if it's a relative power hog, the Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 brings so much speed and utility to the table it's hard for us to recommend another midrange 3D card. Only the particularly power conscious or those who play games with known multichip scaling issues should look elsewhere.
