Sapphire HD 4870 X2 2G GDDR5 PCI-E Pro Reviews

computershopper‘s review Edit

Setting a new performance standard in its price range, the Radeon HD 4870 is a purchase that gamers with larger monitors— who don't want to drop more than $600 on a graphics card—won't regret.

While Nvidia may still hold the crown for the fastest single core card in the GTX280, the Radeon HD4870 X2 shows that ATI is interested at getting back the overall performance crown, and in most respects has succeeded with the new card. All this at a price point that isn't too outrageous compared to the price that some GTX280s are going for.

The AMD Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB graphics card is incredibly impressive and easily takes the performance lead for a single graphics away from NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280. The power consumption is pretty high, on par with a pair of GTX 260s and we were let down by the performance of CrossFireX but neither of these factors over-shadow the power the card provided for high-resolution and high image quality gaming. If you need an enthusiast-class graphics card for your next gaming system then AMD Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB is your ticket to gaming nirvana.

HEXUS‘s review Edit

In a perfect world the Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB would be as quiet as a GeForce GTX 280, ship with lower power-consumption figures, and use a single-die approach to eliminate the potential foibles of CrossFire rendering. The world isn't perfect, however, and the R700 does exactly what it was planned to do: framerate domination. We'd lend a modicum of pragmatism and recommend most users look further down the chain, to Radeon HD 4870 512MB, as it provides excellent performance at 1,920x1,200 for almost half the cost...

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

The new Radeon HD 4870 X2 is a winner for ATI, and if it wasn't for its power-hungry nature, and the massive amounts of heat that it generates, we would have given it our full recommendation. At a recommended retail price of US$549, it's about US$100 more expensive than the GTX 280 currently, but it really does offer great performance for its price - at least most of the time.

ATI's tactic of using multiple graphics chips on a single card to get the top performance may set our alarm bells ringing when it comes to compatibility issues. However, we experienced no problems and the price and performance of this card is undeniably great. All of which makes it thoroughly deserving of a recommended award.

Tom's Hardware‘s review Edit

This is how we rank the four individual test candidates we received: MSI is loud, but it has the strongest fan profile with the lowest temperatures. Asus has with the best overclocking potential and allows very high clock speeds for the GPU and memory. Sapphire convinced us with its low price and great accessories. HIS is all-purpose and has some of everything.

The HD 4870 X2 is an excellent card and it really gives you the chance to buy a P45 board confidently. With the HD 4870 X2 I can now build a new system that will overclock extremely well, thanks to the ability of using the very fast P45 platform. It’s also an added bonus for a lot of people in that it’s cheaper than its X48 brother.
