Sapphire HD5830 1GB GDDR5 PCIE Pro Reviews

overclockersclub‘s review Edit

There is quite a bit to say about the two new Sapphire cards coming out, the Sapphire HD5830 Xtreme and the Sapphire HD5850 Xtreme. The first aspect of the HD5800 Xtreme series that I wanted to point out is the fact that at the stock speeds, the temperatures that the cards were able to get were the lowest when compared to all of the other graphics cards that they were compared to. This does give you a great starting point for your next system build if you are trying to keep your system as cool as possible.

All this is a theoretical though, as at present prices we can't recommend the HD 5830.

Focusing on the review card, Sapphire's Radeon HD 5830 1,024MB represents the best job it could have done with the GPU provided by AMD. The cooler's good, overclocking is great, and CoD: MW2 is an excellent addition. But priced at over £200* we feel that Sapphire needs to knock on AMD's door and ask for a healthy rebate on each card.

The HD 5830 Sapphire is a great version of the HD 5830 thanks to the new cooler and the option to get a copy of COD MW2 with the card.

Even though the HD 5830 can almost give the modestly overclocked GTX 460 from MSI a run for its money, a stock GTX 460 would probably be beaten in some situations but overclocking these days is a) very easy and b)if it's too hard most companies are offering the GTX 460 with such big overclocks out of the box.

It all comes down to performance and even though the HD 5830 shows flashes of brilliance which totally justify its price there are many other situations where disappointment reigns. The simple fact of the matter is that the framerates jump around too erratically from game to game to justify this card's price. Let’s be straightforward here: the price of the HD 5830 is right in the middle of the HD 5770 and HD 5850 but its performance is more often than not much closer to the lower-end card.
