Synology DiskStation DS409slim Pro Reviews

ITreviews‘s review Edit

If you want a NAS device that does much more than simply provide network storage, the DS409slim comes highly recommended. With a seemingly endless feature list, it's an incredibly versatile device. There are some downsides: the use of 2.5-inch hard drives means adding storage is more expensive compared to 3.5-inch NAS devices. We were also disappointed to discover extra licences must be purchased if you want to monitor more than one IP camera with the Surveillance Station feature. Despite these issues, though, the Synology DS409slim is a hugely impressive NAS device.

The DS409slim is going to be appreciated by users who prefer compact electronic devices. Although it can accommodate as many as four HDDs, its size is very small. Why? Because it uses 2.5-inch rather than 3.5-inch HDDs. This has not affected functionality. The DS409slim is a very capable NAS like any other model from Synology. We have not noticed any differences in terms of speed, either.

The Synology DS409slim is one of the most impressive desktop NAS appliances we've seen so far this year. You pay a slight premium for this miniaturisation but this appliance is small, quiet, reasonably quick and is packed to bursting point with features.

reghardware‘s review Edit

The DS409Slim will cost you more per Gigabyte than a similarly stocked 3.5in model, but offers excellent environmental characteristics – notably low noise and reduced power consumption. While it is tiny, it does lose out on sheer build quality to the likes of Qnap or the pricier Buffalo units, due to its plastic construction. But when it comes to features and performance, the DS409Slim makes no compromises.

The Synology Disk Station DS409slim makes an excellent NAS server for both home and small business applications, and it fits especially well in offices with limited space.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

Synology's first 2.5in network-attached storage offering has all the features of larger NAS devices in a smaller, power-efficient package. However, the Synology Disk Station DS409slim's cost and capacity limitations are major down sides.
