ASUS EAH4890/HTDI/1GD5 Pro Reviews

pcstats‘s review Edit

ASUS 'EAH4890 videocard is going to capture the attention of a lot of enthusiasts. ATI's Radeon HD 4890 has so far proved to be one of the fastest single-GPU videocards on the market. The closest performing counterpart from NVIDIA, the Geforce GTX 285, is significantly more expensive. Combine that with the ability to play pretty much any game at 1920 x 1200 resolution with all eye candy options turned to their maximum, and the ASUS EAH4890 HTDI/1GD5/A is a compelling videocard for anyone who's serious about having a high-quality gaming experience. Recommended.

While those who are intimidated by overclocking or changing hardware settings may be better served by getting a reference or factory-overclocked videocard, the true overclocking enthusiast will find that joining AMD's Radeon HD 4890 GPU with excellent cooling and overclocking options makes the ASUS EAH4890 TOP a very promising videocard indeed.

The EAH4890 isn't the fastest card available, but it offers superb performance at a price well under $300. Its excellent overclocking capabilities will appeal to tweakers.

motherboards‘s review Edit

The ASUS EAH4890/HTDI/1GDD5/A card shares many common features with the TOP card including the dual fans, the 6 heatpipe cooling solution, the Super ML Cap and Voltage Tweaks. The difference between the two cards is the higher clock speed of the TOP and the higher selling price of the TOP; otherwise the two cards are identical. ASUS clearly put a lot of thought into the design of these two cards and it shows throughout. Performance on the ASUS HD 4890 is excellent with game performance that meets or beats its rivals in the market at this price point. All in all this is a Hot Product for those seeking a 4890 with exceptional cooling and fast performance.

The ASUS EAH4890 TOP increased our average framerates over that of a reference Radeon HD 4890 in every game, but in terms of gameplay advantages out of the box, the EAH4890 TOP didn’t provide any in these games.

TechSpot‘s review Edit

Although the Radeon HD 4890 showed strong gains in a few select games, it was the GeForce GTX 275 that consistently delivered excellent performance. Even when taking overclocking into account, we don't feel the HD 4890 is worth the price premium over the Radeon HD 4870.

HEXUS‘s review Edit

ASUS has used its considerable resources to engineer a couple of high-end graphics cards with a difference. The Radeon HD 4890 Voltage Tweak appears to be rather unassuming at first glance. Dig a little deeper and you find that ASUS has endowed the card with variable-voltage technology, accessed through the bundled SmartDoctor application, and enough to push the sample card to a more-than respectable overclock.

HardwareZone‘s review Edit

Amongst the other Radeon HD 4890 cards, the EAH4890 Formula is certainly above average. Performance is as we expected, and the card runs significantly cooler compared to stock models thanks to its unique cooler. All in all, we have no complaints with it.

AMD's Radeon HD 4890 is substantially faster than HD 4870 and it has massive headroom for overclocking. The only thing is, we’re not sure it offers good value for money.

phoronix‘s review Edit

The RV770 graphics processor was -- and continues to be -- great, but AMD has really outdone themselves and raised the bar with the introduction of the RV790. It was not uncommon during our Linux testing to find the Radeon HD 4890 1GB graphics card running 15 to 20% faster than the Radeon HD 4870. This boost is largely achieved by the elevated core and memory frequencies, but those frequencies can be pushed even higher! With the ASUS Radeon HD 4890 (and likely the graphics cards from the other AIBs as well), the overclocking potential was great and we had no problems pushing this card to 1000/1200MHz.

All in all the HD 4890 Voltage Tweak from ASUS is a nice version of the HD 4890 which lets us experience something new. Hopefully we do see more of this technology come into play with other models in the future.

ASUS has put together quite a nice video card. We can see that with the clocks on offer, performance is very similar to that of the Sapphire 2GB version that is also overclocked. The most important feature of the card though is the cooling and that's the whole idea behind the Formula line up of video cards.

hardwarecanucks‘s review Edit

What does make the ASUS TOP unique is the Voltage Tweak feature. Usually we don’t add overclocking observations into a conclusion but with the ability to increase voltage up to 1.45V through SmartDoctor, this card can really fly. Just remember, with increased voltages come increased heat output so make sure you have sufficient cooling.
