In lots of ways this is a great little printer. Although its ‘toadstool in a bucket’ design might be a bit gimmicky, there’s no denying it’s a convenient way of carrying printer, cassettes, power supply and spare consumables. It’s easy to use and is versatile, printing from USB, PictBridge, memory cards, optionally Bluetooth and even infrared. Prints complete quickly and are high quality. Unfortunately it's let down by decidedly expensive running costs.

Though a competent photo printer, the Selphy CP790 is not a good value. The unit and prints are expensive, and the software bundle is meager.

At first glance, the Canon Selphy CP790 snapshot printer looks more like a lime-green lunch pail. With its convenient handle, it begs you to take it to your next children's party or family get-together. The trade-offs are a high purchase price ($180 on 11/9/09) and oddly designed, wasteful consumables.

The only real problem I could find with the SELPHY CP790 - the slightly high initial cost and the expensive refill kits - might be a deal breaker for some. At $179.99 for the printer and $30 for each 108 print refill kit, some families might find the CP790 out of their price range in this economy. Or they may go with an equally expensive all-in-one inkjet printer they can get more use out of day to day. This is such a shame because I had such a blast reviewing the “lime green dream!”

PC Advisor‘s review Edit Like Unlike

The Canon Selphy CP790 succeeds in being portable, capable, and even amusing. Still, the awkward paper handling and plastic-intensive ink cartridges are design drawbacks.
