Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Pro Reviews

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 performs as well as the best compact cameras on the market, but its mirrorless competitors, in price and size, deliver even better performance.

ephotozine‘s review Edit

The Panasonic Lumix LX5 is a great camera for anyone looking to develop their photography without the bulk, weight, and potential expense of a ILC system or DSLR system. The camera provides an abundance of options and controls, and more importantly expansion potential. You can use the flash hotshoe to drive slave flashes, add an optical or electronic viewfinder, and more. Image quality is excellent for a compact camera, thanks to an impressive wide angle 24mm Leica f/2.0 lens. The body of the camera is built to a very high standard, and the ergonomics of the camera are excellent.

PC World‘s review Edit

The Lumix LX5 isn't the most novice-friendly camera, but it offers an insane amount of power for a fixed-lens camera when you dig into its manual controls.

DigitalCameraReview‘s review Edit

The Panasonic LX5 offers excellent image quality and good digital noise performance. Video quality isn't perfect, but it's a solid follow-up to the LX3 with some nice incremental updates.

Camera Labs‘s review Edit

Panasonic's Lumix DMC-LX5 is certainly a very nice camera to use. It feels good in your hands, sports decent controls with a well thought-out layout, features a bright and wide lens with quick and confident focusing, enjoys the choice of full manual exposures or one of the best auto modes on the market, and delivers decent quality results.

Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-LX5 replaces the LX3 as the ultimate enthusiast compact, but at around £400 it’s not cheap. If the LX5’s excellent high ISO performance, great video mode and versatile 24-90mm lens sound attractive, it’s the best compact in town, but otherwise the LX3 is still a great camera and it’s almost £100 cheaper.

DP Review‘s review Edit

Successor to the popular LX3, the LX5 brings a host of improvements and new features, including an excellent multi-aspect sensor, a slightly more versatile optical zoom range, and better ergonomics. It's not the fastest compact around, but it is a great camera for the enthusiast photographer or DSLR user who wants something a little smaller.

That said, these two cameras are very close. If you're after top quality in a pocketable form, the Canon PowerShot S95 is the way to go; the Panasonic DMC-LX5 offers more features, control and flexibility.

PhotographyBLOG‘s review Edit

So, there are elements of the LX5 that will immediately be familiar and non-threatening to those who have tried one of Panasonic's point and shoots yet are now looking for something meatier and more future-proof. And there are other elements, such as the high resolution screen, option to add a viewfinder, the hotshoe plus the ISO 12800 setting, that will prompt existing DSLR owners looking for a 'snapshot on steroids' as a pocket-sized back-up to feel like they're not just buying a slightly expensive toy.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

Despite its shortcomings, notably its weak JPEG processing, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 delivers an excellent all-around shooting experience--fastest in its class, full featured, and capable of shooting some very nice photos.

www.trustedreviews.com‘s review Edit

The much anticipated Panasonic Lumix LX5 is expensive, but it is without a doubt one of the best compact cameras on the market, offering superb build quality, classic design and easy handling, with fast performance and outstanding photographic versatility. The longer zoom range is a welcome improvement, however in terms of image quality there's just no real advantage over the older LX3.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

If you don't need long telephoto reach, full 1080p HD video recording and a swivel screen, the Lumix DMC-LX5 is definitely worth considering. It's well made, generally well-thought-out and has a great lens. A great family camera or SLR replacement in other words, but hardly an impulse buy at £360 - so while its downsides are not huge, they do need to be weighed up.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

There is clearly more to this camera than immediately meets the eye, as the LX5 comes across as a veritable pocket rocket and sports the physically smaller dimensions we imagined Micro Four Thirds hybrid models would deliver, when we first saw those cameras' press shots. All we need now is to be able to swap the optic on the front, and thus quite possibly never need to have to buy another digital camera ever again. That will probably be the case in any event, as unfortunately you will need an extension on that overdraft to be able to purchase one for the too-high price being asked on launch.

The new Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX5 makes several improvements to the old flagship LUMIX DMC-LX3. It's an expensive product but its specifications look great.
