AMD Phenom II X4 940 Pro Reviews

bjorn3d‘s review Edit

AMD can rest easy. The Dragon platform is in far better shape than the Spider platform was at launch. The new Phenom II processor seems to be an ideal companion to the 7-Series motherboards and the HD4870 GPU's, especially the HD4870X2, and offers a very nice package for users who are after good performance at a good price. We liked the fact that we could overclock it to 3.7 GHz without much work on air-cooling. We did however notice that you get a lot more out of the Dragon by putting in a HD4870X2 instead of an HD4870 1 GB as we otherwise just run into GPU-limitation before we can utilize all the extra power of the Phenom II, especially when it has been overclocked.

With AM3 Phenom IIs just around the corner it is tough to say how popular the Phenom II X4 940 & X4 920 chips will be since they are only AM2+ compatible. For people with existing AM2+ systems that want a boost, then an X4 940 or X4 920 would be the way to go. People wanting to build new systems might hold off to wait and see what AM3 processors and motherboards will be priced at (and the performance difference).

One of the main advantages of Phenom II processors is that you can gradually upgrade your system, first buying your new processor to use with an older AM2+ board before upgrading the motherboard and RAM when you can afford it. This is in sharp contrast to the immediate expense of buying a new Intel Core i7 processor, motherboard and DDR3 RAM. Although the Phenom II can't rival the power of the Core i7 chips, it's still incredibly powerful and significantly cheaper.

motherboards‘s review Edit

The Phenom II X4 940 CPU is available online for $219, making it price competitive with the Intel Core i7 920 CPU. Performance on the CPU is as expected and AMD is slowly catching up to the Intel platform in speed as in many cases the CPUs are identical in performance but lacking in others.

The AMD Phenom II still simply does not best the Intel Core 2 Quad on a clock per clock basis. I think enthusiasts were at least expecting for AMD to pull up a bit beyond Core 2 given Intel’s recent leap ahead with Core i7. No matter our expectations, the Phenom II does not have what it takes to be a champion.

ExtremeTech‘s review Edit

Phenom II is here. AMD has finally achieved performance parity with competition in its price range. Or, you could simply say that AMD had to price Phenom II appropriately. We didn't even throw in benchmarks from the Core 2 Quad 9650, which is at clock speed parity with Phenom II; it would have been no contest. And the two higher-end Core i7 would have simply run away with all the benchmarks.

Enthusiasts who lean towards AMD will have another toy to play with, and one they should have a good time hanging out with. The base performance competes well with similarly priced Intel parts.

TechSpot‘s review Edit

Some of the positive news for AMD was unexpectedly delivered by the gaming tests, where the Phenom II X4 940 was competitive in all the games we threw at it whereas its predecessor was severely lacking in this aspect. Low resolution gaming tests showed the Phenom II falling behind the Intel pack, but this didn't represent a real gaming environment. Instead when running at full resolution where the games became more GPU bound, the Phenom II was able to get its act together and that's what mattered the most.

TechSpot‘s review Edit

Now with the potential for some decent overclocking action, the Phenom II X4 processors represent a much better value than the originals ever were. However, it's unfortunate to see that the 20% clock frequency increase didn't make the Phenom II X4 940 significantly faster in many of the real-world tests we threw at it...

HotHardware‘s review Edit

We get the feeling these first two Phenom II X4 processors are just the tip of the iceberg. If our overclocking results are any indicator, AMD will likely be ramping up clock speeds on the Phenom II in the not too distant future, most likely when the DDR3-capable versions are ready. There's a good probability the next spin of these chips will be able to hit higher frequencies, that, in addition to the increased bandwidth that will be afforded by DDR3 memory, and potentially some tweaks on the chipset / motherboard level, should push the Dragon platform's overall performance up a few more percentage points, which will put them right on top of Intel's Core 2. Time will tell.

Unlike the original model, the Phenom II offers real competition for midrange Intel chips, and it's a particularly attractive upgrade for current Socket AM2+ users.

Unless Intel drops its price to win favour on the Q9550 and Q9450/Q9400, when the original Phenom X4s launched, AMD's CPUs will be good value. We'd obviously still love to see a cut down £100, or even £150 Phenom II X4 do a large overclock on air: but for now ~£200-£250 still isn't a huge ask for a competitive CPU that doesn't use a whole lot of power (until overclocked and heavily overvolted).

benchmarkreviews‘s review Edit

In the majority of our gaming benchmarks and some of the CPU tests, the 3.0GHz AMD Phenom II X4 940BE either matched or outperformed the 2.66GHz Intel Core i7-920 processor. For many, performance may be defined as a artificial score from a synthetic benchmark, but in the real world these tools aren't very similar to a normal workload. When it comes down to it I think that the person who can play games, browse the Web, rip music, and update their personal finances at the same speed with one processor as they could another should be wary of how we calculate performance.
