Given that other LED side-lit products have exhibited severe screen uniformity issues, something which the Panasonic TX-L42D25 is free of, this makes it a strong contender in this category. Of course, buyers should remember that they are paying extra money for style over performance when compared to traditional LCDs. For readers already sold on a slim display, Panasonic’s offering has the least issues we’ve seen on an edge-backlit LED LCD television to date.

However painful a decision it might have been for Panasonic to turn to LCD technology for a 42in TV, the fact remains that the L42D25B is a very accomplished 42in LCD debut. There are times, indeed, when its pictures look spectacularly good, with only some gentle weaknesses with dark scenes preventing it from sneaking up into whole-hearted recommendation territory.

As a first foray into LED tech goes, the TX-L42D25B impresses – it's definitely the best LCD screen I've yet seen from Panasonic. Well worth auditioning if you're looking for a new 42in set.

Overall the TX-L42D25B is a great LCD HDTV with an excellent greyscale, accurate colours, good quality deinterlacing and a very pleasing picture. If that were all I’d have no reservation in recommending the TX-L42D25B, but, in addition, it also comes packed with features like internet functionality, Freeview HD and Freesat HD. So if you are looking for a slim display with a great picture you should definitely consider the TX-L42D25B.
