TrendNET’s TEW-691GR router and TEW-687GA Wi-Fi adapter are good products with certain downsides. Although they do have advanced hardware components and nice-looking exterior design, they have some problems on the software part. At the current moment it is impossible to install third-party firmware on them, so you have to get along with what their manufacturer offers. There is only one complaint about the Wi-Fi adapter: its real performance does not match the capabilities of its chips.

The TRENDnet TEW-691GR performs fairly well. Wireless speed is its primary advantage, capable of serving multiple users at high speeds. Built-in gigabit Ethernet ports ensure maximum wired speeds for LAN transfers and full utilization of whatever network package you have. The raw performance of the TRENDnet TEW-691GR is by far its biggest weapon and advantage against competitors. The router looks fairly plain from far away, though the colors from the LED and ports make it look significantly more impressive. The visual design will fit nicely into office settings for businesses.

I suppose the first thing that should be said here is that there are currently very few wireless adapters that can take advantage of the technology (or speed) of the TEW-691GR. This does not mean that you cannot enjoy the performance today; it just means that you are not going to get near the upper 450Mbps limit. In the end we managed to see a connection speed listed at 270Mbps, but the throughput was not near that listing.

TrendNET let us explore what it calls the world's first 450Mbps router. At up to 50 percent faster, it may have tremendous appeal for those who transfer large amounts of data between computers on their own network. The device did provide solid performance, but we'll find out in our TEW-691GR review if everything else is in line.
