expertreviews‘s review Edit

Fast speeds, lots of useful features, easy setup and a competitive price – there's nothing not to like.

A very mixed bag, with some great features, good performance and unrivalled ease of setup, but tying offline downloads to a single BitTorrent client, bundling some unimpressive software add-ons and hiding most of the oily bits is unlikely to get enthusiasts slavering over it. Which is a shame, because at heart it's a pretty decent router.

PC Advisor‘s review Edit

In a cross-platform Mac and PC network, the Belkin Play Max Wireless failed to provide adequate connectivity. Wireless transfer performance also fell short of specification, although this is more typical of wireless routers.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

So here's the plan: instead of buying a Play Max router, buy its little brother, the Belkin Surf. It's less than half the price, doesn't include any of the tiresome, unnecessary features, and does the job of routing internet traffic around your network just as well. As for this offering, consign it to the 'marred by software' heap.

The Belkin Play Max doesn't disappoint with its performance as a router. However, the bundled apps, which are required to access its additional features, are a massive annoyance, to the extent that most users are likely to abandon them altogether.

Good performance, a wide range of features and a very tempting price, just ignore the hype over those apps

reghardware‘s review Edit

The Belkin Play Max is potentially useful hardware, and easy to set up as a basic wireless router. But the impression that the software was patched together out of a bunch of open source functionality without properly thinking it all through doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in the device.

CNET Reviews‘s review Edit

The Belkin Play Max Wireless Router seems like a simple and fast wireless router, but its useless desktop software and cumbersome USB-related features make it less appealing than other options.

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

The Belkin Play Max wireless gaming router ($130 list) has the potential to be a very good router. It's targeted at gamers and multimedia enthusiasts, and is one of the most feature-heavy consumer Wi-Fi routers I've ever reviewed. But half-baked software and subpar performance made this feel like a beta product; even the latest firmware did nothing to resolve the issues. It's a shame, really, as the Play Max is the top router in Belkin's new Surf, Share and Play line.
