small package - big, big sound

Ownership period: less than a month.
I only recently came across a set of these incredible little darlings. These came my way as a part of a package deal I worked on 3 Yamaha AVR's, a Sony AVR, a Niles SI-245 amp, a Yammie 5 disc DVD player, a Denon 5 disc CD player, Paradigm speakers (1 pr. Monitor 7 v.3's, 1 pr. Mini Monitor v.3's, 2 center channel units, one pr. ADP-370 V.2's, and a PDR 1200 Sub), an RBH MC-414C, and a few other bits and pieces hardly worth mentioning. Anyway, I got everything home and began hooking all of this up - comparing each against the other as I went along. My yardstick is my favorite old Yammie AVR, a pair of Mission Electronics Model 70 MK II speakers, and a couple of different powered subs I keep around for grins. As I went through all the various set ups I was pleased with most every thing. Each of the Paradigms sounded somewhere between highly acceptable to pretty damn good. Personally, I find them to be a bit lacking on the high end - just not very bright and don't convey some of the finer points of various source materials. Still yet, pretty good overall. There wasn't a one that anyone should feel embarrassed about owning. But the speakers that ultimately proved to be the hands-down, kick-ass winner in this comparison were the tiny little RBH MC-4C's. They, when combined with the RBH MC-414C, the Mission MII's, the Paradigm PDR-1200 sub, and a Dalquist 12" powered sub delivered the most spectacular results in a 5.1 stereo set up (sorry not really into surround sound - okay for soundtracks, but I lean more towards music formats and prefer more of the old-fashioned stereo imaging when listening to my favorite pieces). These babies have capabilities well beyond my ability to describe. From easy listening (i.e., D. Krall, V. Morrison, etc.) to thundering rock (B. Seger, Queen, etc.) to blues/jazz to classical (a quartet or full symphony orchestra - makes no difference) the results were just some where short of amazing. The best description I can provide is this: tiny package, but big, big sound. And the best part, the very best part? I got it all, everything listed plus for the paltry sum of $300. A new pair of these RBH MC-4C's will set you back somewhere in that area. Please know they are worth every penny of that, too. This is how good I think they are. I have almost nothing in them, yet I would not take $200 for the pair. Yeah, they are that good. On the other hand, the Paradigms are looking for a new home at this very moment. Like I said, they are good, even approaching very good. But they are for sale and the RBH's are not. That, dear friends, says it all.
